Steve Anderson puts out a couple of books on dry fire practice (also has some downloadable samples I believe):

I like to use a snap cap when dryfiring. I know it's not bnecessary, but I do anyways

Snap caps are great, they keep you from messing up your firing pin. Also, put a dime on your front site and pull the trigger to see how many times you can before it falls off. This doesn't work so well with the XD SA because you have the rack the slide each time. You could also consider getting a couple of snap caps and randomly load them in with live rounds in your magazine for range work, and see if you "flinch" when you pull the trigger and nothing happens. It is also a good drill for the emergency, "Tap, Rack Reaccess" scenario. Because if the gun jams in real life and it is on, you need to know how to clear the jam quickly and get back into the fight.
