You can even put technology together to provide a 3D view of where equipement is in relation to a bld ect. It's not like they are tracking weapons in a large geographic area. This is limited to a base, armory or few buildings. The technology gets expensive to cover large areas.

I doubt Sig will put the technology into every weapon and this offering will be LE/Gov deal as stated. It's great to see firearm companies being forward thinking with technology. They are about 5 years behind retail and mfg.

indeed. its a grat idea for tracking military and LE weapons. but for the private consumer. .. its a nono. . .

You're missing the point. Now that the tech exists, it's just a matter of time until it becomes law to put these in all guns and the police will be able to drive down the street and know what house has what guns, where they are in the house, and how often they have been fired. All without a warrant.

This is VERY scary technology!!

What's that blinking blue light on your rifle??? Oh that's my bluetooth hands free weapon kit with optional OnStar... haha

I guess if they're just tracking their inventory in their own buildings that's ok, but if they try to put that crap in so that all they need to do is drive by your home and see what you've got then it's a major no no!!!

Just like that dang exxon speedpass crap, it's only a matter of time before somone figures out how to clone it by passing something near your keys.

You guys are paranoid. They are not tracking civilian weapons or gear. They are tracking gov/le inventory the range is within 100 feet. The technology is cost prohibited to do anything on a large scale. This type of technology has existed for a long time. What this does is takes the administrivia away from LE for inventory mgt.
They are not tracking civilian weapons with this.

Paranoid? You mean like assault weapon bans, ammunition registration and micro stamping?

Ed, do you have the link to the original story? I can't find it.

RFID can be defeated by simply microwaving the chip.

Sure, but do you want to explain to an ATF agent why your gun doesn't show up on their scanner during a "random" range inspection?

+1. There's no reason to get all up in arms (forgive the pun) over this. It's strictly for inventory tracking on LE/Mil installations & makes sense considering they have to account for dollars spent & make sure no one walks out with anything. I don't see what all this fuss is about, let alone why some of you are already crying about how you'll never buy *insert manufacturer here*'s guns because of this. We all know that tune will change as soon as they come out with the next magazine-cover pistol or rifle.

This is a great idea for LE and Military use. I think that is all Sig is planning. I don't ever see them implementing this technology into civilian purchases. And even if they did, I'm sure you could just remove the RFID chip. Or just forget about it since RFID only works very short distances.

I think you guys are too paranoid about this...

I like the idea!
