Glad nobody was badly hurt.

Do you think the famous Glock partially unsupported chamber contributed to the severity of the damage?

I repaired a Glock that looked like that. My Fathers buddy got into hand loading and was less than concerned with proper loading techniques. He had loaded 500 rounds of .40 S&W that had quite a varied volume of powder. Seemed that he was charging cases with the little yellow scoop that comes with Lee dies. He blew up that Glock 23 really nice. I replaced the trigger, mag catch, trigger bar, and magazine. It ran just fine after that.

I pulled ALL his ammo apart and wieghed the charges to find that he had varied charges between 5 grains and 9.9 grains of Accurate #5 with a 180 grain Rainier plated bullet. Bad JuJu.

Cheers
Mac.

Yeah, that does look like an out-of-battery failure... Glad there wasnt excessive injury.

I had a round that was double-charged shot through my XD45 service, no problem resulted.
Pure, unadulterated horse dung! Anybody who reloads would recognize that as b.s.

The blown Glock in question probably wouldn't have fired, had it been 1/8" out of battery. .45ACP is a really low-pressure load, but any powder that only takes 5gr. for 230 gr. bullets is really easy to overcharge. Another possibility, considering that a fairly fast powder was being used with a heavy bullet, is that the bullet was set back when it impacted with the feedramp, causing the spike in pressure.

At this point I am going to give most everything a reasonable chance at causing the problem. We keep playing with the gun trying to get it to fire out of battery with dummy rounds and we only come out with plausible causes for the kaboom. Anyone have pictures of other Kabooms?

I load all my pistol round with Bullseye powder also, & with the .45, 200 grain & 230 grain bullets, I usually stick with 4.5 grains........so 5 grains seems very reasonable to me.

The base of the cartridge that blew could have been slightly oversized also holding the slide just slightly out of battery but leaving a small part of the case head unsupported. I did a double charge in a 1911, it blew the mag out, broke the grips and bulged the barrel. The pistol was running after the next gun show and as far as I know is still going strong today.

I was wondering the same thing.

I must be the luckiest person alive, because the day I ran a double charged load (was unaware) through my Glock 21 it didn't kaboom. Took the gun out of my hands, but there was no damage at all.
