Joe...
It's an opportunity. You work for them. Do what they want. Act in their interest and you will be fine. Act in your own interest and they don't need you. Simple as that. Good Luck!

Worked for a knife/sword mail-order catalog (some of you might get the catalog) for about 4 years. I started in the call center, then on to the showroom where I spent most of my time. I declared my major at college in IT and started to semi-harass the IT guy to allow me to join him (wasn't his decision). I finally made it over to the IT side. I did meanial things such as change keyboards and mice, there were a few scripts that were inplace that I kept up with and ran every so often. This went on for 4 or 5 months till one day I was doing some checks of computers that the IT manager assigned to me and then he & the VP called me into the office and told me "your position with the company was no longer needed, you can resign or we can fire you." ...
It affected me pretty bad for a while, I dabbled in a couple of temp jobs before landing one where I spent a year at and then left for another job...I still try not to get complacent and work on staying on top of things so that my position will be needed for a long time to come.

When I first got out of the service in 1989 I was working 3 jobs trying to keep a roof over our heads 2 were security the other was a Lot person for one of Madison Wi's biggest auto dealers. The Sales people were allowed to take used vehicles for the weekend. One of the Sales people was a georgeous brunette with a fake personality, she treated us as her personal servants. She checked out a almost new BMW off the lot for the weekend then brought it back on Monday morning trashed on the interior and reaking. I found a used condom, lacy underwear the source of the smell by the way

I was left go, downsized, fired 11 years ago from a job I had for 3 years. I was the newly promoted billing manager of a small dr office. They hired a new office manager who wanted to handle her job and the billing. I was bumbed for a few days but then enjoyed fishing for two months until I landed my current job. I started out making almost twice the money and now make three times as much. It was the best thing that ever happened in my professional career.
Your story sounds like you are a hard and caring worker. Maybe a honest talk with your supervisor would improve things. If not and they let you go, just move on and learn from it. As you said this is your first job you need two or three more to find what you really like. Good luck! |

Once at 16 years of age
I was fired once, when I was 16 from McDonalds for a smart comment I made to a fat woman who ordered two big macks, two large fries, a apple pie and a diet coke, to dine in. She was alone. I said, heck with it lady spluge and get a regular coke, your diet is not working anyway.....
Since I was 18 I am on my third Job. I served 20 years in the Navy. Then I worked 4 years and 10 months as a maintenace supervisor for a Major auto parts supplier. The new Maintenace Manager did not like me. I put up with his crappy treatment for 18 months, then he moved me to third shift. I told him that was the worst thing he could do. The Jerk replied no, he could fire me. I then replied, no you can't or you would have already done it......He knew I was right....That day I started a new job hunt though. 17 Days later I gave my two weeks notice. Plant Director asked me why I was leaving, and what he could do to keep me. I told him I hated working for my Manager, and the manager wishes he could fire me. So, either transfer him or me to a different Plant and give me a 12K year pay raise. He said he would transfer me to our plant across town, but 2K was the best I could hope for as a raise....I showed him my job offer letter, he said he could not come close. Two days later the Plant VP tried to get me to stay. In almost five years with that company I was only making 2500 more when I left than when I started. My new company, I started 12K more than I was there. In two years I have got a 5k raise each year, not counting bonus. My old company tried again last month to get me back.....No way. I like my job now, and My boss is good, and his boss is good.

Well, an untimely miscommunication between me and my supervisor caused the axe to fall today. I no longer work for that company. I feel absolutely terrible.
More on this later... joe

Eh, I've been fired twice...by the same company. I basically quit both times, I just never bothered to tell my boss...it was a landscaping job, and the hours sucked (never knew when I was working), and I was underpaid. I basically just stopped caring. Eventually I called in to see when I was supposed to work again, and was told "your services are no longer needed"...LAWLS.
Then, the next year, I ended up going back since I was broke as hell. I was probably the best employee they had, so they wanted me back. I lasted about a month before I just didn't go in one day, and called my boss that night to say I wasn't coming in anymore. That was a good learning experience. I love my current job, even though the work isn't very fun. My employer actually gives a **** about me, and thus I do a good job. I won't work for a company that doesn't care anymore, even if the pay is good.

I've never been fired, but there was one job I had right out of college that was a mutual parting of ways from a bank where the manager was an absolute b*tch. I got laid off from a construction job during the winter once in college...but so did everyone else. I got laid off from a company that was owned by a friend of the family, who asked me to leave my previous job for this position, because they couldn't afford to pay me...that's not my fault is it?

I think it's almost a rite of passage to get canned at least once, especially when you're younger. My own personal experience:
It was my first real job out of high school. I was working for a very large retail chain that specialized in children's playthings (you do the math), and my being there happened to coincide with the massive marketing blitz for Disney's movie Pocahontas (you know, the one where she's a PC-revised Barbie doll). After hearing the music from the movie played over the PA incessantly for weeks, I just couldn't take it any more and scrawled a rather blue joke about said leggy native American princess inside the maintenance closet. What I didn't know is that there was a hidden camera already there trying to bag somebody putting gang graffiti in the store. Bing, bang, boom and I'm gone. Oh well....you have to be young and stupid at least once, I guess.
