About to buy an XD

I was going to originally title this the "Should I buy an XD?" but since this is an XD forum I guess a better title would be "Why would an XD be a better gun?"

I've been looking for a good 40 S&W as my first gun I've considered the

XD 40
Glock 22
Walther P99
Beretta 90-TWO
SIG P226

The Sig and Beretta are probably out since they're too expensive. But how would the XD be superior to the others? Is a ported barrel worth it? In Commiefornada I can only get a 10 round mag. Would it be able to accept a higher capacity mag? Where's a good place to get it cheap?

I'd rate the first three in the order you listed them. I like the feel of the XD better then the Glock and P99, while I felt that the Glock was easier to shoot. The P99 with AS trigger is AWFUL IMO, if you do get a P99 get the QS. The P99 has a nice grip, and feels nice in your hand, but I felt it was way too snappy compared to the other two.

I really liked the Glock trigger, however I felt that it was really an inferior gun...it just didn't feel as "solid" as the XD. That's not to say I didn't like the Glock, or that I wouldn't trust my life with it. Plus, I think Glocks are played out. I didn't want my first real gun to be a Glock, since I know I'd catch crap for it. I will be buying one soon, however.

Have you shot any of these? If not I highly suggest going to a range where you can rent guns to test as many as you can. You may find that you just hate one gun that others love. That is why we got our XD...just preferred the way it shot to everything else we tried. There is no substitute for testing 'em.

As for the mag capacity, the gun is the same, only the magazine is different.

BTW: For a first gun/handgun I would highly suggest buying a 22 then buying a larger caliber pistol once you master basic technique. The money you save in ammo while learning will more than make up for the cost of buying the .22....

I have an XD40SC and love it, best gun I have ever shot (sadly the only XD I've shot) if your set on 40S&W you may want to check out the new XDm, theres lots about it on this site,

16 rounds of 40S&W and the reliabuility of an XD is hard to beat.

It's been said many times. Go shoot them!

Spend some time and rent them, and get the best gun for you. What we like best, does you little good.

If you do want a .22LR, the Walther P22 is a great gun. A little picky with ammo, but fun nonetheless. The Ruger MkII/III is also good. You'll find the MkII to be much cheaper, and used.
