Is this true?!?!

TAPCO just sent me a hotlist email. They are selling AK kits for $199, limit 5 per customer. At the top of the email it says that AK kits, barrels and other such nice things wil be banned form import by the BATF come Sept 2005. Anyone else hear this? I am glad now I got my AMD-65 kit last year ($99 for kit with in excellent condition with matching serial numbers) and that it is already built out now.

It is true. ATF reinterpreted the import ban and now says that barrels are no longer allowed for importation for non-sporting rifles. No more AK kits wiht complete barrels will be allowed in after September 10, 2005 (they gave sellers a chance to fill exisiting orders). Form 6's for importation of barrels will no longer be approved. Buy now if you want any kits.

Is there a potential to buy some of these up and sell them for a profit in a few months?

I assume that complete rifles will still be available? You just won't be able to purchase a new "imported" barrel?

If the kits are so "wrong" then why allow existing orders to be filled? The gun laws are too goofy. That's the same as saying "we believe this is against the law, so act now before we can do anything about it." A simple barrel is now illegal?

What does the president have to do with it.

The Import ban was pre Bush and the ATF reinterpretied it not the president.

If I bought this kit what else would I need to build an AK, and where would I get it?

No more imported "non sporting" barrels. Barrels from sporting rifles such as the WASR-10 MIGHT be allowed, meaning some sporting rifles could still get in legally, but no one really knows for sure yet.

Probably, but to be honest if you are asking this, you already missed the prime time to buy up cheap kits. There are some $99 romanian kits floating around, but not many left.

The barrel isn't really ILLEGAL, jut no more are allowed to be imported. The onles currently on the market were technically only meant for repair or replacement purposes. The ATF threw in that provision becasue there were a lot of angry customers and vendors when the sale of imported receivers stopped around 1989.

You would need a new US made reciver, and 5 other parts made in the US. You can't have any more than 10 foreign parts on the rifle. I usually replace the pistol grip, hammer, trigger, disconnector, and muzzle brake. Also you need the tools to rivet or screw it together.

Are you REALLY asking what the President has to do with a Presidential Executive Order?

(Yes, it was Bush the Elder's EO... which Bush the Younger could reverse or modify any time he felt like it.)
