The ATF is re-interpreting the statute itself, which was an act of Congress.

And that is precisely what the Bush I and Clinton EOs did; tell the ATF how to apply the 'sporting purposes' loophole in the statute.

Here are parts you can get to make it US legal. Usualy the kit comes with every thing but receiver but you must change out parts to have it comply to BATF regs. CAn not have more then 10 imported parts, I try to have less so BATF wil have less to find suspect.

1) Receiver - multiple US manufacturer or make you own (yes it is legal to make your own receiver, just not to make it to sel to others).
2) Trigger group - Several US manufacturer - counts as 3 parts
3) Gas piston - Tapco
4) Pistol grip - several US manufacturers
5) Stock - several US manufacturers
6) Foregrip - several Us manufacturers
7) Muzzle attachment - several Us manufacturers
Magazine follower - Tapco

Change out enough of these and you have a nice AK that the BATF will approve of (at least for now).

What do you think will be the total cost for something like this? Around here I can get AKs for about $350, so I am trying to see if someone has done this and what their build cost was compared to one already put together. Always trying to save a buck but if it's literally a couple of them I would just rather get one built to save on the hassle and shipping charges for all the parts.

Between parts and labor and shipping I figure my AMD-65 cost me about $600. I had a class 7 FFL build it out for me in AZ as I wanted it done right, with rivets and do not have the necessary tools/know how. I was willing to spend this much as I wanted a unique weapon, you do not see an AMD-65 everyday. Also mine was built on a 1.6mm RPK type receiver, much stronger then the 1mm AK type, should last longer. If you want just a cheap AK that is reliable and works well, buy a SAR-1 from Century.

My Romanian build cost me 99 for the kit, 30 for the tapco trigger group, 10 for the pistol grip, 10 for the muzzle brake, and 15 for the receiver flat and rivets. Thats about 165, maybe 200 with shipping added. I borrowed the tools at a bild party here in ohio to build it.

That gave me a true Romanian military grade rifle except for the receiver of course. Nothing wrong with the century WASR's, but in my opinion, I like the quality of these ex-military kits better. Not to mention the fun it is to build them from a flat of metal for a receiver. I'n the future, I'll buy 100% receivers instead of flats, but I wanted the experience on my first build. I have a few more to build

I wish my Krink had the 1.6mm receiver, I have a 63 kit being built now, with the sheet metal forwards. Can you get a 30rd mag in with the froward pistol grip?? I have heard that some can't use them. I keep 20s in my Krink, but I like the 65s barrel extention/fh more then the Krink style.

Yes, you can, but I would not want to do it in combat. I took the forward grip off for the time being. It interferes with bench rested fire for sighting it in. I got it on paper at 25 yards, now need to walk it out to 50 or 100. I am thinking of replacing the standard fore grip with a rail mounted one and adding an Ultimak rail in place of the gas tube too. I did have the rear pistol grip replaced with the M249 SAW type from Tapco, much more comfortable. The guy whio built it for me also did a custom tune job on the trigger, smoothest lightest trigger on an AK ever IMO. Too light at times, accidentaly did a few double taps without meanign too. I really need to post a picture of it.
