Reasons for a .45..
I'm new to guns so please excuse some of the questions I have asked over the past few months.
Anyways, in my mind I can justify reasons for having a 9mm (Cheaper ammo, range use, acceptable caliber for concealed carry; I have a XD9SC) but for some reason I can't rationalize buying a .45 for any other reason than concealed carry. If you have a .45, why did you choose that caliber? What are its uses? For those who don't want a .45, why not? Thanks in advance |

I carry a .45 (superb stopping power..so are other calibers so dont flame on). There really is no advantage to having a .45 over a 9mm (its all about shot placement). Granted the expansion of a good .45HP round is HUGE...the size of a quarter!
There are only a few reasons somone buys a .45 1. Likes big bullets! 2. Is intrigued with the history of the round and the 1911 3. Has way to much money to blow on ammo or reloads his own I fit all 3....(no, im not rich...i reload!)

1. A round that starts life as a big bullet makes an even bigger, nastier hollowpoint when it expands.
2. I like the way it feels when you shoot....a relatively slow, "pushy" recoil compared to the snappier feel of smaller calibers. 3. It's been around for a hundred years--it's not going anywhere. 4. Most pistol work takes place at a range of less than 25 yards. Any further out than that and you should be using a long gun if you have any choice, so I'll use the biggest bullet I can that will work in that limited space. 5. Because John Moses Browning said so.

The .45 is an all-around excellent caliber. Beyond the high cost of ammunition, I cannot find a single bad thing to say about it. I think that in the long run, I would rather have a .45 than a 9mm. The recoil is less sharp, it makes MUCH bigger holes, and it makes major power factor.
All that aside, I have a 9mm, and am happier with it than I would be with a .45. Being a college student with no access to reloading equipment, I am remarkably poor these days. There is only so much that I am able to spend on ammunition. By my (possibly flawed) logic it is better to be able to afford to practice with the slightly inferior caliber to the point that I actually can hit something. A hit with a 9mm is better than a miss with a .45. just my $.02. Really, you can't go wrong with either.
