Well a few reasons (and this probaly applies for many here:

Many of us grew up shooting Dad's service 45 pistol or carried it in the Army or Marines and it was familiar.

#2
The pistols that launch it are very comfortable to shoot and carry. For such a large round, the 45ACP, in a normal sized pistol, is a very pleasant shooter.

#3 The 45ACP is a fairly accurate round.

#4 The 45ACP's lower velocity and size and weight make it a great defensive round.

#5 There is a ton of history behind the 45 round, the M1911 pistol and its inventor and those that carried it in harms way. The aura around the round appeals to many students of history.

#6 Not too long ago, it was not THAT much more expensive to shoot 45 over 9mm. In fact, back in November of last year, I was paying about 3 dollars a box more for it that a similar box of 9mm. The ammo pricing for 9mm versus 45 used to be MUCH less of a factor than today.

#7 Since the 45 is about 100 years old, many of us are oldtimers with this round and it brings us comfort and we just stick with it for comfort and nostalgia's sake because it works. Its familiar.

One 50rd box through a decent M1911 and you'll see why this platform and caliber has such longevity and appeal.

I have two handguns in calibers over .22 lr....both are .45 acp. I have a 1911 and an XD45 compact. I love them both. There's something about big, fat projectiles.

I shot a XD40sc and didn't care for how snappy it was, but that was prior to being "experienced" with shooting and what not, so who knows. On the same day, I shot a 4" Kimber CDP 1911 and loved it. I also shot a S&W revolver in .45 acp and liked it.

I went with the .45 in my XD because I was originally going to get a 1911, but didn't want to drop $1000 on my first handgun after my .22 revolver my dad gave me. I knew I was going to get a 1911 at some point, and I liked the XD compact, so I got the 45 thinking I would keep all the calibers the same...that was when I was young and dumb before I knew there was an addiction with handguns and firearms in general.

I've always been told to shoot the biggest round you can accurately, so that's why I have a .45 .

Well from what I heard it is easier to control then the .40 and I would never buy a 9mm just becuase when you hold them next to compare the size well you have heard size does matter.

because the first big bore pistol i ever shot was a .45acp and i shoot it more accurately than a .40 or 9mm which has more of a snappy recoil to me and because even with a .45 there have been cases of drugged up people being shot 5 or more times and before they went down even with good shot placement imagine how many shots a 9mm would have been needed in the same cases. big bullet huge expansion in a hp. i like the big boom. because it eats other smaller calibers for breakfast

.45acp isnt necessarily more deadly than any other round. If placed right, any bullet can kill effectively.

I personally chose the .45acp as my carry gun because I simply like the .45acp round.

Its proven over time to be a reliable mankiller.

Its a little easier to shoot than most other larger calibers since its subsonic and has an easier recoil.

It has much less chance of over penetration of target.

When it expands as a hollow point it creates a larger wound channel.

Its an All American caliber round created right here in country.

I didn't buy a .45, I bought a 1911A1 that just so happens to be a .45
For day to day shooting I love my 9mm's. I haven't gotten my ccw yet, but when I do I bet I carry my ppk/s .380 the most. Sure the .380 is kinda small but it'll put a man down. You have to shoot what you feel comfortable with too. Most women for instance, would not want to carry a .45, but some would. You want the gun to go bang, and the bullet to stop the bad guy.

After a lot of research I chose a .45 because of history, mainly. Reading a lot about how it was chosen over .38 cal in the Philippines; the Thompson/LaGarde study of handgun effectiveness of 1907 recommended minimum handgun caliber for use be the .45; of how it was used more effectively against the German troops with their 9mm's during WWI in trenches; it was used during WWII; it was used in Korea, and then Vietnam in the tunnels; now it's being used in Afghan tunnels by SOCOM members as I read and they prefer the .45 over the issued 9mm. It's slow moving, but it seems to make a BG change his attention from you to that of self preservation, or just stop him all together. I've got a 9mm Parabellum that shoots machine gun ammo, and in my opinion the 45 seems to be more effective on hanging targets. Just my .02. Thought of getting a 9mm XD so the wife could shoot it, but after the research chose the 45 to protect us both with.

There was an excellent thread on another forum about a guy who shot several rounds into an attacker armed with a .40cal.....after hitting him in the neck/hand/chest/lower abdomen the lower abdomen shot stopped the guy cuz it shattered his pelvis, he still laid on the carpet reaching for his pistol (the hand shot knocked it from him). After counting the rounds he discharged as he was shooting at the BG while backing up into his bedroom......he went out and purchased a .40cal.

Tho I suspect the 9mm is inherently more accurate, but I'm confident with my .45 XD
