There are only a few reasons somone buys a .45

1. Likes big bullets!
2. Is intrigued with the history of the round and the 1911
3. Has way to much money to blow on ammo or reloads his own

I fit all 3....(no, im not rich...i reload!)
I agree shot placement is important but I would not say "it's all about shot placement". A .45 that doesn't expand is already .45 inches. A 9mm may expand to that. A .45 that does expand is gonna be nasty.

I also like the .45 because it's fun to shoot. That slow push back feedback is more satisfying than the quick pop/snap of the 9mm or .40.

A 9mm may expand but a .45 will never shrink.

Is that so you can catch them and drag them back to the lair?

Yes, but nothing that I can afford to shoot on a regular basis.

I have both. 9mm ammunition is much cheaper which will allow you more time at the range. There is, however, just something about the .45 I would say that the 1911-A1 is the most recognized handgun in the world. Everybody - and I mean everybody - instantly recognizes that frame.

Anyway, if you are a new shooter, go with the 9mm for range time and concealed carry for now. Save up for a .45 as you gain proficiency with the 9 and before long, you'll have both too!

The .40 is a nice compromise if you just can't make up your mind!

I got the .45 as my first gun. I was on the fence between the two, but I really liked the "compact" version of the XD45 (no compact available for XD9).

Normally when I can't decide between two things, I default to what's cheaper. Both guns the same price, but 9mm is cheaper ammo (but once again, I really liked the compact!).

However, the only public gun range here is in the middle of the f'n woods, waaay down a dirt road, and unattended by any sort of official; so I figured I wouldn't be going to the range often (I don't own a truck) enough to spend a lot of money on ammo.

Then someone said, in relation to guns, "if you can't decide between two, go for the bigger one."

So I did!
