MREs for emergencies?

Last week I bought four cases (12 meals per case) of MREs for $200 from a young Marine here in the Houston area. I live near the Gulf of Mexico, where hurricanes are a part of everyday life, so having canned goods (and/or MREs) and bottled water on hand is a no-brainer. Anyone else here have MREs on hand for emergencies and/or the zombie apocalypse?

I don't have MRE's on hand....bottled water and canned or other non-perishable stuff sure.

at least 2 weeks worth if not more.

I just took delivery of a year's worth of freeze dried "just add water" storable food, with a gravity water filter.

I have a mix of MRE's, dehydrated foods, and other long term storage foods like rice put up in buckets. Have all of your bases covered. The MRE's will be handy for short term or bug out situations. The Mountain House types foods are for long term interruptions and such.

We have a couple of cases of the civilian MRE's in the house: just in case. Also have water, certain canned goods, and some freeze dried stuff in plastic bins.

Only problem I have with the MRE's is that the kids think it is a great treat [I cycle them thru and use them up every year or so, and the kids have been my disposal system.] and keep getting into them... I used to do the same thing with the "C" rations that dad had brought home....

Have not HAD to use them yet, but just a nice insurance policy.

It's OK to keep MRE's, but they don't last forever regardless of what they say. We recently pulled some that were about 5 years old and they were not serviceable. Mold and who knows what else. I would keep a few cases on hand, but if you camp take them with you so they get replaced regularly.

I have one case. I live in a dorm at school, and the idea of an interruption of food supply scares me a bit. I like the idea of camping with them, I really should burn through these eventually.

I occasionally find them at the local commissary for around $40 per case.

I've got two cases sitting in the closet, I'll definitely stock up on canned foods and other necessities soon.
