If you didn't have a news story to go along, I would say that's a fake picture. I'm a pilot, and small planes like that are very affected by balance and CG issues. Look at the plane on bottom. It's a taildragger and has the weight of an entire second plane fore of its center of gravity. I can't figure out why the thing doesn't have its nose in the asphalt.

You don't sound like a nerd; good point!

I saw this on the news this morning. It really isn't very uncommon, particularly when one or both planes don't have a radio. I suspect that the plane on the bottom does not. I think I met that guy at another field near there a couple of years ago, and if it's him the plane has no radio.

This is not a difficult case to assign fault to. The plane on final always has right of way. Visibility is probably not an issue in this. A few years ago there was an accident where two planes collided and got stuck together on final approach. The plane on top was a low wing and the plane on bottom was a high wing. I can believe the visibility argument in that case, but where was the communication? When you are on final you have a very good view of the runway out the front of the plane right down to the flare and the plane on top was obviously higher than that or he wouldn't be on top of the other plane. The plane on top had the right of way, but probably also had the best chance of preventing the accident. Sucks for both, but both had their head up and locked.

The top plane does have it's CG ahead of the CG of the bottom plane, but not in front of the landing gear. A gust of wind would probably nose that over.

This has almost happened to me twice in the last year. One at Page Airport west of Oklahoma City about a year ago, and once at Mid-American in Pryor, OK about 3 weeks ago. The one in page I had just taken off and as soon as I turned crosswind there was a plane on my nose coming straight for me. He wasn't using a radio. After my wife saw him land at Page she demanded that I land and stomp his guts out. We were in a hurry and stuff happens, so we just came home. The second time I had made no less than 4 radio calls and then when I was on about 1/4 mile final a Navion that had been sitting at the hold line since I was 5 miles out says he's on back taxi and rolls onto the runway. As soon as he turned he realized what he'd done and shot a U-turn right back off the runway just before I went missed. One of the big problems is that at a small airport is that it is entirely possible for you to start the engine and taxi to the runway between another aircraft's radio calls. That is why at small airports I always sit and listen for a few minutes before I get on the runway. There are too many maybes at uncontrolled fields to not be vigilant with traffic awareness.

Yes it can and does happen. Not that often thank God . This was from a few years back. Another case of High wing v Low wing no see um's. Both planes landed safely from about 200 ft up . nice touch down and roll of the edge of the runway. All participants were ok. This is why I'm very cautous when taxing onto the runway after my runup. Must look diligently for aircraft on final approach.

That's the one I was referring too. I just noticed that there is also one mentioned in this weeks ePilot newsletter.

That's how baby airplanes are made.
