I thought that loose shot going through a rifled barrel made a donut pattern??

Perhaps I should rephrase... I know that if you shoot shot through a deer-taker (slug gun) with rifling, by about 10 yards the shot is in a donut so big there's about a 1-2 foot hole in the middle.
I just always assumed the same would happen with a rifled pistol barrel. |

would be interesting to find out . . . most of my experience has been at really close range (just beyond shovel reach distance) on snakes.

During my highschool years I did a ton of squirl hunting with a Crosman 2100 air rifle. Air rifles are well under-rated. During my tenure of air rifle hunting, I also killed a couple large rattle snakes, about 4 foot long each. A bunch of medium bodied snakes. Tons of other small game including rabbits and the occational tweetie bird. A .22lr might be a better choice for snakes. If I were you, I would carry a .22lr pistol. Light enough so that it is convenient and easy to carry, but still potent enough to do the job. I don't think I'd shoot shot down a rifled barrel of any of the guns I own. Just my two cents.

The STINK for days method?
I am having more fun doing it the " fresh kill and toss to foxes to eat" method.

You ever thought about teaching your chickens to shoot? You go out there blasting away your chickens ain't going to be laying much for eggs. Course on the other hand if your just raising them so you can wring their necks and eat em it don't matter.

My chickens lay more eggs than we know what to do with them right now, so if the biddies don't lay for a day each time I pwn a rat, well so what. In fact today I had to ask one hen if she had a concealed egg lisc, as she has been sneaky and layed where I hadn't seen the eggs- till I spotted them last night! Then today I caught her on that nest!
Anyway will this shot hurt the barrel of my XD?

Here's an interesting article on people making there own snake shot loads.
Snake Stopper I'm curious though, doesn't .22LR have a higher FPS than .40 or .45? Even though it's smaller shot, wouldn't the penetration be better? |

Three down-one got away
I bought some 22 mag snake shot, and tried to kill one at about 30 feet....no good..as was stated the shot forms a doughnut...that one got away. We moved to the big guns...pulled out the 12 gauge...three died. I think I have a lot more to go...at least two really bigs yet.
