PC frustrations

And no I'm not talking "politically correct" frustrations either. Uggghhhh!!! I am so frustrated with my PC. Seems there is always something going on where something won't work. Out of the clear blue sky I can't get any sound. I could last nite but today .... NO!

I am so tempted to go buy a Mac. Any thoughts pro or con?

I have had PC's only but I know a lot of people really love the Mac's.

Did you try restarting your computer? That is what I usually do if something goes wrong.

After checking the most likely things that may cause the issue and then doing a help search, cycling the computer on and off is always the next thing on my very short list of "what do I do now."

Our tech guy at work admits he is not a "PC guy" and yet he gets paid really decent money to be the tech guy ... seems he should have an idea beyond the basics on how to fix PC issues .... At any rate he almost has me convinced to go Mac. He says that most of the funky, out of the clear blue sky, demon possessed PC issues are non-existent in Mac's.

Is he feeding me a line?

He is probably right about a lot of the PC issues being non-existent in Mac's. Probably not feeding you a line. A lot of people have told me and I have heard that the Mac's are a lot less prone to problems. That being said..........I still am sticking to the PC just because I am used to operating it and most of the software made today is for the PC. Plus I think the PC has like 90% of the computer market. Just be sure to have a good Security Program (I use Norton). They say most of the viruses and such are being written to work on the PC because of the volume of PC's in operation and that is why there are less security issues with the Mac's.

If restarting your computer didn't fix your sound card problem you can always Google what you need to fix it. That is the second thing I do if I have computer issues. Just type in something like "sound card not working with XP/Vista" or whatever your operating system is or "fixing sound card in XP" etc. Try to type in what you want and it will take you to sites that will walk you through a lot of stuff for free and you won't have to pay or wait for hours for some tech person on the phone. You could also type in something like "diagnosing sound card problems". Be creative. You should find something.

I am assuming you checked the wires to make sure none were knocked/pulled off by a family member or pet. Sometimes, sound cards just do go bad. Don't know how handy you are but it is not hard to replace a sound card if that is what you need.

Good luck with your problem. Hope this information helps.

Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu

Easy to install

Easy to use

No problems thus far.

If you don't have to run some type of proprietary software it works like a charm.

Even if you do most software runs pretty well in Wine now.

Been a Mac user since the first one came out. Never have had to go to a tech. They just work and they work well. Downfall is that software is more pricey. I run Microsoft Office on my Macs and can work back and forth with my Windows friends with no problems.

About your sound problem, you didn't turn it down last night and forget did you?

Another vote for Ubuntu. My main machine runs Windows XP. I use it for gaming, syncing PDAphones and mp3 players, print sharing, file sharing, sharing media to my Xbox 360, etc. My slightly older machine is Ubuntu, and I absolutely love it.

However, if you have an iPod or device you need to hook up and sync easily with your computer, then I would suggest sticking with a mainstream OS like Mac or Windows. Unfortunately, there are still some things that can't be done with Ubuntu. But keep in mind that the Mac OS is based on Unix, so Ubuntu is not much different than Mac OS. Mac is just a bit more polished.

"Out of the blue PC problems" just don't happen. If something is working this morning that was working last night you either installed something (on purpose or on accident), changed a setting on accident, or somehow found a way to uninstall drivers for your system. If you'd like help in restoring your sound shoot me a PM and I can run you through some steps.

As far as your tech at work not being a PC guy... does your company even have any macs? How the hell did he get a job doing tech support if he has no clue of the standard diagnostic process regarding PCs.

Yes, he is. While Macs do not suffer from some problems that PC users face every day, they have their own problems. Anyone that says Macs don't crash is a liar, I see it happen every day.

At the end of the day, the majority of problems are caused by user error. You can't blame the computer...you're the one telling it what to do.

If you'd like help with your sound issue post some more info, such as operating system, and exactly what happened.
