Pistol and ammo locked in seperate boxes is the safest bet

Florida honors most CCW permits. Go to your states website on CCW and it will tell you where it is honored, if not look up florida. Shouldn't be hard to find... I'm just feeling lazy.

If you are a concealed permit holder, your state is likely honored in Florida. If not or you are not a permit holder, you may legally carry your LOADED firearm IN YOUR CAR as long as it is:
- not on your body/person - not visibly displayed such as on a seat, dash, console lid - kept in a snapped holster AND inside a glove box, console, trunk, other case or enclosure with a lid or top that securely fastens

tally XD is partially right.
you may carry in your car in FL as long as your firearm is securly incased. which would be in a holster with a snap in your glove box in a shoe box in your book bag. FL does NOT have a three step rule like many think the law simply states as long as your firearm is securly incased. Statutes & Constitution :View Statutes :->2007->Chapter 790 : flsenate.gov Quote:

Actually
tally xds suggestion is the way to go just got out of my concealed carry course for the state of florida and correct there is no 3 step law in florida BUT the term securely incased is vague so as that is, the instructor (also owner of jacksonvilles biggest and best gun shop) suggests carrying it in a snapped holster in your glove box IF you dont have a concealed carry license from florida. the poster will need to find if his CCW is honored in florida and if so hes good to go

Welcome, FireFighter.
Don't forget to check the specifics of carrying with or without a permit in the 2 states between NC and FL too!

If you don't have a CCW, it must be secured - this is any type of secure according to state law. Technically, it could be in a ziploc bag and be legal...
Typically carry for those without CCW is either in a snap (or velcro) holster under the driver's seat, or in the glovebox (it does not need to be holstered in the box, as that constitutes 'secured'). Other points of interest. Florida's Castle Law extends to your vehicle as well. Also, you do not have to declare your weapon to an LEO, unless asked - though common wisdom suggests doing so before reaching for your insurance & registration if they're in the glovebox along with the weapon. Florida honors many out of state CCWs, but be sure to check - as Florida does not honor non-resident CCWs and some states have quirky laws as to exactly what Florida will honor from that state (I think CT, AZ, and DE are the big 3 for oddities, but I can't remember).
