Until states like NY finally agree to be the only ones make the laws within thier state, and prohibit counties and individual municipalities from enacting thier own; this will never work.

Sounds simple though, doesn't it? My state DL is good everywhere; but not my CCW (which is harder to get)? A CCW issued by county A works in some areas, but maybe not in a city within the issueing county? STUPID!

I do seem to remember it saying we have the right to travel freely though.

But that's my memory for you.

Driving is a "privilage", not a right...

Federal law preempts state and local law. If a National CCW passed it would overrule the legislation of each state. Indeed NY state law preempts county and city law. NY has chosen to allow home rule for certain things. But that could change in the blink of an eye.

So a National CCW is workable and I think it is a good idea. At least it is a lot better than what we have today. Some will lose from it but most will gain especially if you travel interstate.

Only in a limited manner.

The individual states would still be allowed to determine their own restricted areas, such as public buildings etc.

The legislation is primarily to prevent you from being prosecuted for having a concealed weapon in your car, or on your person in an unrestricted area.

That depends upon just how far Congress wants the legislation to extend. They can make the scope as broad as they wish and let the states go to the Supreme Court to assert their state's rights. In the meantime, the Fed still pre-empts local law until proven otherwise.

How would that affect me over here in WI, being 1 of only 2 states in the whole country where it is 100% illegal to carry a concealed weapon as a civilian? Can't each state make their laws stricter than the federal laws, and still keep it illegal here?

The more I think about this idea, the less I like it. Federally-imposed reciprocity is just not good.

If this was a law stating that Federal land/buildings were supposed to honor local state gun laws, that would be awesome. If it was a federal Concealed Carry program which was separate from the states, I might not hate it as much (but I would still hate it).

But the whole idea of making states honor the CCW permits of other states is just not good.

Nobody in Commie-State Massachusetts should be forced to live under the laws of a legislature they did not elect -- like mine here in Utah.

We need something more than Congressional bullying to fix our gun problems -- that goes both ways. We can't have Congress impose NYC's stupid laws on anybody else and we should likewise not allow Congress to force NYC to obey decent states' laws.

National reciprocity is a bad idea.
