It is my personal opinion, and it seems to be backed up by our professors (who are PhD and do this kind of research when they're not lecturing) that as long as you watch your red meat intake and seek out plant-based protein sources, you'll be just fine.
Actually your body needs a good portion of carbs for muscle production. If you cut out too many carbs you'll actually get lethargic. Your body needs good complex carbs and the right levels.

I try to avoid soy protein, but like whey protein. Most of the bars have soy protein and maltitol. Each make me fart my ass off. If I have 3 bars during the day, I will be farting the nasty stuff all night long @ 5 minute intervals.

Your mileage my vary...........
