Thumbs down Virginia County Bans Rifles for Deer Hunting

Article

After a lengthy and contentious series of public hearings and comment periods that concluded April 22, Charles City County, Virginia imposed an outright ban on using rifles for deer hunting. Shotguns, muzzleloaders and bowhunting for deer are still allowed.
Only two years ago, the county allowed rifles for deer hunting for the first time, as long as hunters were in a stand at least 10 feet above ground. Prior to that, deer hunters were limited to shotguns, bows and muzzleloaders.

When rifles were deemed legal, “Lots of people went out and spent thousands of dollars on new rifles, scopes, ammunition and tree stands,” said one county resident. “Now they don’t want to let us use them.”
Supporters of the ban voiced concerns about safety, despite the fact that in the two seasons when rifle hunting was allowed, not one documented accident occurred. Much of the county’s land is flat (hence the 10-foot above ground rule), and there was great concern that such terrain increases the potential for missed shots to strike unintended targets. The fundamental safety rule that all hunters know, “Be sure of your target, and what’s beyond,” addresses this very issue, but in the minds of the rifle-banners the rule doesn’t make a difference. At the April 22nd meeting, Elbert Parker, who supported the ban, held up a small cut-out section of plywood and aluminum siding and said, “This is all that stands between a bullet and your children.”

I think the tree stand rule is reasonable, but the ban is overkill.

It isn't any flatter than it is here. Hmmm. Hunter tanking a rifle shot from his shoulder at 5' high, shooting at a target that is only 3 or 4 feet high. Sounds like it's going in the dirt to me. If the area it so populated that this causes a safety concern it is too populated to hunt in period. This law is lame and addresses a problem that doesn't exist.

Thats the first hunting gun law that's reasonable that I"ve ever heard, in truth I kinda like it.

We need more laws to protect these three rights. Ban guns in schools, it obviously works.

It is a harbinger of things to come. As cartridges get more powerful and have flatter trajectories and population density increases, the people are going to get worried and pass these laws. I can't really say that I blame them for being nervous.

I think NY has similar laws for Westchester County and all of Long Island. I could be wrong as I'm not a hunter.

And it starts....

Can't hunt deer with rifles, then rifles no longer have a sporting purpose... might as well ban them!
