getting into shape

i've come to the realization that i'm out of shape...overweight, not very strong...not toned etc.

tonight was the first night of my new exercise routine, did ok with the situps, pushups etc...but OMG, just did my jog, real light from one end of the block to the other and back, and jesus i barely made it....now i'm completely ashamed i let myself go.

every journey starts with a first step eh?

No doubt. First a block each way, then 1.5, etc..I've been doing it by walking a treadmill due to an ankle injury.

At first one mile at 3 MPH killed me. 6 months later three miles at 4 MPH 5 days a week. I changed the diet a lot and this has also helped in getting in to better shape. It's made a real difference in how I feel and the weight has dropped off from 220 to 192 (6' tall). My Doc has told me that if I keep this up I might be rewarded with an extra 10-20 years or so. It's really worth it man, keep it up.

I need to join you guys. I know that everyone says it, but it just seems too freaking busy to find the time. I work 10 hour days, have a wife and a baby on the way, volunteer quite a bit, try and find time to relax, etc. Now that the weather is nicer I should be able to get out more.

Good for you! I love hearing about people that are actually doing something to become more healthy, rather than bitching about airplane seats being too small or whatever.

I recently started running, 3 miles in 30 minutes (sometimes longer), usually 3 times a week.

The way I stay on it is, I signed up for a 5k (3.1 miles) marathon. It's not a real serious thing, like you could walk the whole thing if you want. I just did my first 5k 2 weeks ago, and though I was hurting/tired afterward, I felt really good about it. Doing my second 5k this Saturday.

It gives you a goal, something to keep working toward. A little more instant gratification than just waiting for pounds to melt off. (I'm currently 6'4", 190 lbs.)

afmo - don't get discouraged bro. Keep at it and you'll see the results. I took started getting back in shape about 2 months ago and I'm now down about 9lbs and have dropped a pant size. I started on a treadmill and I could run about 3 minutes and get tired so I'd have to walk 2. I kept increasing the run time and I'm now able to run a full 45minutes without stopping.

Before I started I was 149-150lbs, and now I'm hovering around the 139-140 range. I hope to lose another 7-10lbs

Good for you. I did that a few summers ago, and lost about 50 pounds in one summer. I am 6'4" and went from 254 to 208. I gained a bunch back in law school, but my goal is 180 now, and I'm running again now.

If you aren't a runner, the one thing that will help more than anything is to get your pace and breathing right. For me, I breath in in the time it takes for two steps, and out for the next two. It seems to really help.

Congrats on taking the first step! Stick with it and some day you'll look as rock-hard and chiselled as my friend Carl!
