caught this special on Sci-Fi today...i was surprised that they called Pandemic Flu (the bird variety) the #2 most likely doomsday cause behind Asteroids...were millions to become suddenly ill with deadly flu, i can easily see the medical system in the U.S. failing...kinda scary...

It wouldn't be doomsday, it would be a sucky 3 months and an instant fix to the Social Security problem. That being said I hope it doesn't happen, but it would actually in the long term be good for the economy if it happened.

the kind of flu that has the potential to become pandemic (i.e. Avian Flu H5N1) won't be your average "look out young and old." It'll be an indiscriminate killer. the last pandemic flu in 1918 increased the mortality rate for 15-34 year olds to 20 times normal. 50 deaths per 1000 infected is a HUGE mortality rate for a flu. now there are studies that say the 1918 flu came from birds...hrm....sound familiar? put it this way, i'm more worried about pandemic flu than i am about food shortages....

If you track PandemicFlu.gov it's full of updated information. When the flu hits a lot of people are going to hole up. You need to get enough food to last you at least 30 days. It will have a pretty big impact. If you check WHO a lot of countries are not reporting infections or deaths. Looks like a 60% mortality rate, you know it has got to be higher but not identified. My wife and I have a good 3 months of food and are working on 6 months right now.

I remember when they were giving the swine flu vaccines and a lot of the older people were dying from the vaccine shots and not the flu. Now let's all panic and start getting those shots right away.

The problem with influenza is that its difficult to produce an effective vaccine until the strain is known, by then its too late.

Royally screwed up intelligent analytic mind. We need more laws to protect these three rights. Ban guns in schools, it obviously works.
