Most people I know that carry have pulled on a person once in their life. I also know a lot of people that have shot dogs, especially when they have kids. The flipside is you cannot drink while carrying. If your going to drink DON"T CARRY. Kinda like if you use NOS don't drink.

Everything else has already been said.

Oh one other thought get a soft holster when around the kids, they run up and hit the gun=bad

and take the gun off before playing with them

We need more laws to protect these three rights. Ban guns in schools, it obviously works.

Failure to do so can mean the difference between your being free or going to prison for a long, long time as a convicted felon.

You have to learn how to walk away from confrontations that ordinarily you would mix it up to defend your honor. Your gun prevents you from getting into most little squabbles. You simply have too much to lose.

You will have difficult decisions to make and you will find yourself thinking about life in a totally different way... a tactical way. When you might have been simply enjoying a garden, you will be examining possible exit routes and the availability of cover and concealment. You will have to decide when situations are genuinely threatening or escalating and start drawing very fine lines concerning your own behavior.

I could talk about a hundred other things that you will face. The bottom line is that carrying concealed is a life-changing event. If you are not committed to this lifestyle... that of an armed citizen... get yourself a can of pepper spray and enjoy shooting in your leisure time at the range or when hunting.

Carrying concealed isn't for everyone.
Big +1. Excellent post.

Sorry man, I don't mean to sound rude or laugh at what's apparently a legitimate situation, but...

GANGBANGERS IN ALASKA?!? That just sounds funny. I can't even describe the mental picture I get... "We reppin' tha REAL FAR Westside, yo!"

Thats the whole problem, it doesn't make sense. But they are trying soo hard to be ghetto they are attacking people, trying to fight people and robbing people, all while they have better cars than I do. It doesn't make sense, but it is a real problem.

Personally in Alaska by nature of whats around I'd carry a 10mm

MuddyA...

I went to your MySpace page and gave it a little study. I can see some reasons why you might want to carry or need to carry and some reasons why you might well not want to. You are a very complex person... multi-faceted in many ways. There are definitely aspects of your life that CCW will affect and affect strongly... some positively and some negatively.

So I can't tell you yea or nay. You have to make the call. Just keep all the things the guys have said in mind.

One of the things mentioned was drinking. You need to be dry as a stone when you have a gun on your side. In many states you can't even enter a bar much less drink alcohol. Same thing goes for any kind of drug or getting high in any way. Guns and partying don't mix well.

I think you are wise to ask the guys here for their opinions. Many of them have been where you are right now. When you are about to go down a path it is wise to ask someone coming back or who has been there what lies ahead. Of course you need to listen to what they say!!

Heed any warnings and then, if it is still right for you, move forward slowly but deliberately. Be realisitic in all your analysis and decisions. And don't be influenced by what other people think about you. They don't live your life or take the last breath of your life... only you do.

Good luck and feel free to bounce any ideas off of me or any of the other folks here who have been through this very difficult choice. I'm sure that any of them will be happy to help you as best they can.

I agree it does sound funny. A gang in Alaska ! You would think of a gang of bears running amuck, or moose bouncing down the streets.

Nope it is young teens with RED bandannas on one side of town and the other side of town sporting BLUE.

Just last week they had a big article in the local papers about the fights and shootings all do to gangs.

Both the Anchorage and Fairbanks police Dept's have started up special gang units. Along with the state troopers and FBI.

Only last week we had an elderly man. In is 60's. Pull into a filling station to get gas. He was wearing a red shirt. Some young wannabe saw the man and ran up to him and started beating the crap out of him. The old guy ended up getting knifed. ( only because he was in red on the wrong side of town)

The kid was punk that had run to Alaska from the lower 48. He had ties to a gang in L.A.
Dew rags and baggie pants and all that crack showing every place is the norm up here now. They had a 14 year old arrested a few weeks ago because his pants where so low that his balls where showing while in school. He refused to pull them up. No under wear on.

FWIW I only read the original post.

Get the permit. Worst case you get it and find that you never want to use, or just don't need it and you don't carry. Or you find that some questionable people start hanging around your place and you might feel better armed.

I know one good reason to get a CPL in Michigan is it's MUCH easier to purchase a handgun with it. TBH, that's the main reason I'm getting mine. Sure, I'll carry it from time to time, but for the most part I wouldn't be able to carry it anyways, and I don't think I'd need it. I live in a good part of town, work doesn't allow it, and I'd rather not carry it to most of my friends' places since I know they wouldn't be thrilled about it.

I guess the moral of my story is that it doesn't hurt to get it anyways, and if you never use it no big deal.
