this used to be the case, but efi changed the game. granted, there is more wear on your starter, but it saves an amazing amount of gas. to learn more, search "hypermiling".

Think the usual timeframe is if you are going to be idling more than 1 min. Some of the stoplights over here, you'd be shutting the car of all the time and the w/t on the starter and motor would not be worth the time or effort especially in the middle of the summer over here. As far as the a/c, there is such a slight difference in terms of mpg's below 65 that again it's negligible. Above 65, you would be better off with the a/c due to the drag created by open windows. Some test results have concluded that a good compromise would to have the windows only partially down while hwy cruising if you were to have the a/c off. Best tips I know would be:
- Keep your tires properly inflated - Drive 60-65mph on hwy - Shut off car if going to idle for more than a minute (at bank, pharmacy, etc) - Check your air filter regularly (does not mean get K&N which does more harm than good) - Swap to synthetic oil (but this would be more for convenience of extended oil intervals, better protection, and maybe 1mpg more depending on driving style and conditions). - Don't carry unnecessary weight (always amazing the amount of junk most people carry inside the car and especially in the trunk). - Use the proper octane of gasoline for the vehicle (Using Reg. when Premium is required will worsen fuel economy and performance thus actually costing more in the long run than if you would have just filled up with premium. Using Premium when Reg. is fine will not buy you any extra advantage in terms of fuel economy or performance unless you have a tuner in which you can switch back and forth between tunes in order to take advantage of the premium octane). - If you are thinking about buying wheels but at the same time worried about mpg's in general, then don't go for the uber heavy bling or spinners. Same goes for adding 35" tall tires. Rotating mass can and will kill mpg's along with worsening the ride quality and performance. - Try to fill up either in the morning or evening and try to do it at 1/4 mark. - If you want a true measure of your actual mpg's then do the tried and true measure of miles/gallons filled up with. I've usually found that the vehicles computer is for the most part stating 1-3mpg higher than actual. |
