I think there is Reality TV - (Deadliest Catch, Dirty Jobs, Ax Men, etc..) Then there is Reality Inspired TV - (Big Brother, and anything else that requires being voted off) That is how I see the difference in the two types of shows.

The mere presence of cameras makes "reality" tv less real. I believe there is some evidence as suggested buy some of the blogs by some of the guys on the boats that there is some staging involved in DC. Some of the guys were complaining that they weren't allowed to play music over the loud speakers on deck (which they usually do) because it screws up the TV sound. Undoubtably, the guys (captains etc) play to the cameras. This show has made them famous and they are doing everything they can to cash in. Not that that is a bad thing. Hey, go for it.
You might have noticed in the first episode this year that the Northwestern has a new logo. This is because they have a line of shirts, hats, etc logo wear out. Regardless, I love the show. |

I like 'Ice Road Truckers'. What a great show.
I also like Ax Men. Anyone that says that standing on a hill when they are dragging tons of logs, uphill from a steel cable isn't dangerous is nuts. How about "topping" a tree 75 feet in the air? Phuck that. I like my air conditioned office.

Personally, I find Captain Hansen to be the least likable of all the ships' captains, the "biker dude" (one of the two Hillstrand brothers... Johnathan?) and the captain whose kids have been crew members (Harris?) seem to be the most family- and crew-oriented. Hansen's all about the money... which, I guess if I owned the boat, that's what I would want.

I was not trying to put down the show when I posted this. Actually I really like it, I saw this link and thought others might be interested in it. Just goes to show that you cant believe everything you see. Even on shows like that and man vs wild.

Laz...
I went back and re-read it and I think I would just say a big wave and not a rogue wave. A rogue wave is a freak wave. They are really huge. I don't think that is what hit them... probably just a really big wave in nasty weather. A rogue can hit you in a storm or on fairly calm seas... all of a sudden you get walloped with a 50-100 foot wave that appears out of nowhere. I think the show in using that term maybe sensationalized a bit. But I have seen DC many times and there is no doubt that out in the Bering Sea they get hit with HUGE seas frequently. There is no way that I would go out there to go crabbing. Those guys have hard, hard stones, if you ask me. So I don't begrudge the producers a little leeway on their terminology. That show isn't and can't be faked. Edit... This is a 100 foot rogue wave... the real deal... ![]() Whoa!!

This shouldn't come as a great surprise. I have a very close friend who works on set design for some of the most popular "reality shows", and they are anything but. Yes, there's more reality to many of these shows than your favorite drama series or sitcom, but trust me, there is nearly as much scripting and editing.
