Transmission Issue

OK, I know we have some gear heads in here.

Here is my problem.

2001 Mitsubishi Spyder Eclipse 3.0 Liter V6 5 speed Manual Transmission.

I will be taking off from a stop light/sign or trying to pass someone. When I rev up to around 4k - 4.5k the car quits accelerating. It is like someone took the stick out of gear. It revs and keeps revving but the car no longer has any thrust to it.

I had this problem about 18 months ago and the dealership put a new clutch in it (cost around $1200 after all was said and done). It got worse and worse over time to where I HAD to get it fixed.

It started out just like this. I don't drive my car hard. I go to work and back and to school and back. I don't race, don't drag, and don't start it with the clutch.

What do you think the problem is? Does it need a new clutch? And if so, why does it need one so soon if the first one lasted almost 100k miles??? It has 116k now. What did I do or what OTHER problem is it?

I don't want to spend $1200 every other year to fix it.

Thanks ahead of time.

Could be a lot of things. Clutch is one, ignition another, possibly either a bad ECU, or your ECU is changing the timing due to another issue that's causing detonation. Check the ignition to make sure nothing is arcing.

The engine doesn't bog down or start running really hard. Its just like it looses it's just like what would happen if you pushed the clutch in except that it doesn't jump to the red-line.

It still rises in RPM's as if it were still connected. I am going to call the dealership tomorrow and see what they thing but I'm kinda worried.

I think God had a different plan for the 500 bucks I spent on the Glock 19 this weekend. ><

At the higher rpms the clutch is not staying engaged so the motor is fine. The more you drive it that way the more you will burn and glaze the plates. I had that happen on an old Pontiac where it was the throwout bearing. I would fight the stealer to fix it right since a clutch should last much longer than that.

sounds like the clutch is slipping in the higher rpm range

That really sucks ass. Is this something the dealership should warranty due to the fact that the clutch is only 16k miles old and it was done just over a year ago?

Would it be wrong to trade this car into a dealership without disclosing this issue? (the dealership will rape my anus on the trade-in regardless)

They should if it's a reputable shop and if they care about customer service.

Yes, yes and yes. Unethical and they will probably have it tested by a mechanic so they'll find it.

I am going to call the dealership today. Wish me luck. Maybe they will go easy on me and only have me pay for parts and not labor or something.

It definitely sounds like a clutch problem. Is your's hydraulic or mechanical? If it's mechanical it might just need adjusted.

Typical warranty for dealers is 12 months/12k miles and you are over that. Good luck getting warranty coverage on it, even if they are reputable. Clutches and brakes are two things that are looked at with skepticism when they fail early because both have a lifespan that is directly related to driving habits. You have a sporty car with a manual trans, they aren't going to believe that you drive it responsibly.
