optical mouse problem
well i have an optical mouse for my computer and i have been having a weird problem.
well when i stand up from my computer after sitting for a while my mouse goes dead about 50% of the time. If im only sitting down for a little bit like 10 min or less it wont. well i have to unplug it and plug it back in for it to work. ive tried all 4 ports and they all do it. so what ive checked/tried 1. usb ports 2.pulling the cable on the mouse to see if there is any loose connections 3. check to make sure im not stepping on or pulling the cord. 4. switched mouse pads i dont think the mouse is broken since it happenes so regularly. and it will only happen if i have been sitting for a while. if they were more random when it died then i would think it was the mouse. the only thing i can think of that might be the cause is i have notice that when i stand up i get a static shock from my chair and then the mouse will go out. im not touching the computer or mouse when i stand up im only touching the chair. i know it sounds weird but this is the only thing i can think of. well i dont notice a shock everytime the mouse goes out but every time i do feel the shock the mouse dies\ any ideas would be great |

What do you mean by "goes dead". I had a wireless mouse for a while and it would go into sleep mode after it sat for a while. Our cat ended up dumping a glass of water on it and killed the mouse.
I have a wired mouse now because I couldn't stand the lag that I would get form the wireless mouse. Some people don't mind it. I really hardly ever notice the mouse cord, but definately didn't like the lag from the wireless mouse. Just my personal preferance.

well even like 10 seconds after i used it, it could be dead so i know its not sleep mode and its hooked up to the computer so it needs no batteries so leep mode would be pointless.
well by going dead i mean the red light isnt on and i cant get the cursor to move unless i unplug it and plug it back in |

So it is plugged into a USB port? Do any other devices lose communication?

Most likely your mouse is just going bad. What an optical mouse does when your not using it is sort of go into its own standby mode (Notice when you stop moving your mouse the red light will dim after a couple seconds). I have gone through a few mice; I used to play a lot of games on the PC, and this has happened to me before. Just go grab a new optical mouse and plug it in. If it works fine, you have a new target to shoot at. If the new mouse does the exact same thing, you're going to have a more serious problem related to your USB ports on your actual motherboard, or the motherboard itself. How old is the computer out of curiosity?

i know i should just go buy a new one. im sure a new mouse would work but i just want to know what exactly is wrong. not so much so i can fix it just so i can know. not knowing why something isnt working drives me nuts! i figured out a way that might help me figure it out. well before i stand up ill slip the mouse over so the red light is faceing up. that way when i stand up i can see exactly when it goes dead and therefor i will be able to narrow it down ti what exactly is the issue |

What kind of mouse is it? I've gone through 2 MS and 2 GE optical mice in the last 4 or 5 years, one just died and the others worked erratic like yours so I chunked them.
