Open Carry Experiment..
Once i pick up my gun in a couple weeks, im going go try an open carry observation experiment.. First im going to dress as i normally do.. your average 22 year old laid back look, flip flops/sneakers, cargo shorts, and a plaid shirt, while open carrying. I'll head to several locations ranging from rural to more densly populated retail and food stores.. ill note the reactions i receive from people.. i'll wait about a month or so, this time, i'll dress like a professional, slacks, shoes, button up and a tie, while open carrying, at the same locations i originally went to, at the same time of day and same day of the week. i'd just like to guage how people react to a person who is open carrying if they think youre an average citizen or possibly someone up to no good, vs the appearance of a professional, probably someone in the field of cj... ****, maybe as a CJ major i could use this for a paper, or get it published some day
![]() i know this is a little early, so i'll make a new thread once the experiment is complete.. but if anyone wants to try this experiment out on a shorter scale be my guest and report your data, also if anyone has tried this intentionally or unintentionally already, please also feel free to make a post.. thanks guys, just thought it would be something fun to try out!! Oh also, post where you live and the area type you live in, ie; rural, suburb, city.. so we can get a feel for your experience!! |

Does your state allow open carry?? If not you are going to jail!

PA is an open carry state. Not quite as unrestrictive as AK but they still allow it. I think Philly lives in their own little world when it comes to firearms laws though IIRC it's a big time no no there.
And hopefully someone who has thought though this enough to put it into an experiment has probably checked or already knew the laws on OC.

Lets hope the conductor of the experiment lives to tell of his findings. Seems to me that the OP is setting him to be like her:

My buddy used to open carry for a little while in SD, mostly for the reaction. Ruger blackhawk in a shoulder holster. He's kinda different. I remember growing up here in Montana, you would see people packing all the time. Pistols hanging off of backpacks and belts at the grocery store, etc.. A lot of people are either coming and going from some sort of outdoor activity and prefer not to leave the gun in the car. I don't really see it as much though, at least not in missoula.

Open carry does happen in Pa. Happens in lots of places everyday and folks aren't getting killed over it. I OC on a regular basis and the most reaction I have ever gotten is some overzealous asst. manager at the "new Wal-Mart" here in J-ville that was quickly (within a day and a half) corrected by the full Manager after an e-mail to corporate.

OC is basically letting a criminal know that you have a gun. So instead of them running up on you and just robbing you, they might decide to put a bullet in your brain and take your money and your gun.
I dont know where you guys live but try that in a not so nice area and see what happens.
