First Handgun - How to Narrow Down the Choices?

I am looking to purchase my first firearm in the very near future, for defensive/conceled carry and range time purposes. I grew up around guns but is has been several years since I have shot anything. My lady is out of town so I decided to google "Dallas gun shows" today, and what do you know there was one this weekend. Well I went and I put my hands on everything! I found myself drawn to the subcompact glocks as well as the subcompact XDs, I am going to try to go to a range in Fort Worth tomorrow and try out as many damn guns as I can in different sizes and calibers for good measure. I am wonder what is a better starting place to base my decisions off of, do I narrow it down by caliber or brand/model first? I imagine there is also the possibility I could like x caliber in x model better than y caliber in y model, has anyone found this to be the case? God help the clerk behind the counter tomorrow, atleast I am trying to make this as easy as possible, haha.
I appreciate your help fellas! Forgive my naiveté too!

There's a lot of subjectives here. What are you comfortable with...Auto or Wheelgun?
I carry a Ruger SP-101 in .38
Handle as many guns as you can at the show.

Leaning towards auto, open to anything, but from what I handled today I believe it will be a glock or XD.

I did like the revolvers I handled today, but I believe I would prefer to have a few more rounds handy. I am sure one will be in the collection eventually.

My two favorite carry guns are;
My XD9sc and my S&W 642 38sp +p.

Renting is the right idea.
Better to spend $100 or so renting, than to spend $500+ on a gun you don't want.
If you aren't happy with your first gun salesman, get another one.
Different salesmen have different attitudes.
Don't let them push you into what they think is best.
Whatever fits in your hand and fits your needs, whether it be an XD or not, is the gun for you......
9mm is cheaper to shoot than any other self defense caliber IMHO.
I love my XD9sc, sold a Glock 26 to buy it.
Springfield Armory

My own opinion concerning autos...If I was looking for a good concealable auto with a fine reputation, I would opt for the Glock G-26 in 9mm.
Here's a good article by Stephen A Camp...

any comment on deciding what should be my first process of elimination? brand or caliber? Or is that not how it works?

Both the Glock and XD are fine choices.
