physical fitness for your finger/hand
Hi Gang,
I was reading a thread the other day where a fellow formite was discussing his problems with getting decent groups with his XD. It made me remember some of the things that I did to improve my grip and trigger press. I bought from the dollar store a cheapie hand exercisor... It looks like a V with foam on grip. You sqeeze it a few dozen times and it helps strenthen you grip. Turn the thing around in your hand where the V is towards you pinkie finger then use just your trigger finger to squeeze it. Trigger finger and grip then get worked separately. Then I found a hand exercisor called the Gripmaster... It has 4 separate finger slots so you can work each finger wow it really worked my fingers/grip. The last thing I purchased was called the Dynoflex. I bought this thing on a whim, its a small ball size of a baseball.... you pull on a string to activate a gyro inside the ball and then you continually turn the ball in your hand working against the gyro. Works the forearms/ wrist like no other exercise. What I did was strenthen my grip; wrist; and trigger finger all independently. I wonder what you guys might have done to improve your grip/trigger finger ? Take care Jack |

I have been playing guitar since I was 12 (27 now) and I play for a living now. Anyone who plays guitar that much knows what kind of freakishly strong fingers and grip it gives.

Oh, I thought you were going to be talking about something else, Spanky.

I use one on a regular basis. When I first started shooting, I had issues with unsteady hands, but it's helped greatly.

I use the Hand Grips as well. Don't forget to exercise your off-hand either. Never knew if you'll have to use it if you dominate hand becomes unable to shoot.

I might have to try one of those Dynofles gizmos. I bought a Grip Master last year and was fairly disappointed in it. I guess it's OK for endurance training, but for building strength it's not that great.
One thing I used to do was take a piece of 1.5" pipe about 1ft long and drill a diametric hole at its midpoint. Run a piece of rope through the hole with about 6ft of excess hanging down and tie it off. Attach a weight to the free end of the rope. Hole the pipe in your hands with the weight just off the floor and wind up the rope. After several new homes I've lost my old pipe and rope and should really make a new one, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. |

I use the same device Tripledigitride uses. I thought it might be a gimmic but I'll be damned if I haven't seen results. I basically type all day so i thought my hands were in 'good shape' but while the reflexes were good the strength wasn't there.

Don't get those squishy ball hand exercisers from Wal-Mart. I used one in the academy for about a week before I popped it, and the white stuff in it went everywhere.
