adding weight to a synthetic stock
i have a savage 110 in 7mm remington magnum with a synthetic stock and this rifle is only a target rifle. well shooting a lot of rounds in a session will leave my shoulder a little sore. i know they make some lead weights for ar-15s (which i cant see why you would need one for a semi-auto 223)
will i have lots of lead at my house that i can weld or form if i need to and melt it and pour it in there if i needed to, but that would be alot of work. well i have tried putting pieces in on a different rifle and added some paper towels to prevent rattling but i couldnt get the rattling to stop. i thought about plaster but i really want it to be easily removed. so does anyone have any ideas on what i can use to prevent the lead from rattling around that can be easily removed. and im sure someone makes something for this but i allready have the lead so i would like to use that. plus shipping on a solid block of lead seems like it could be pretty spendy |

I know guys who have drilled holes into hollow stocks and filled them with lead shot. They plugged the hole with black epoxy. It worked well for them.

oh hey do you think adding sand to it would help? it seems like it would it would still allow some movment so i could remove easily, and would still limit the lead from hitting the sides, it might still move but the sand might fill up some of the existing air gaps so if it still moved then it seems like it would prevent it from having enough momentum to make noise |

Possibly take some plastic wrap and "cup" it into the hole. Then fill the hole with some JB Weld. Let it set up and then put the cap back on it. It should be easy enough to remove it if you want and easy enough to put back in.

I put tire weights in the butt of my daughter's Savage, then filled it with expanding foam. If I was doing it again, I'd glue the weights to the inside of the stock, and them fill it with expanding foam.

good ideas!
about the expanding foam, do you think if i took some vasalene and coated the inside of the stock with it would that let me slide the block of lead and foam out so then i would have a perfectly shaped block to remove and put back in as i needed |

I vote for silly putty or modeling clay.

Vaseline would probably work. Or Pam. You can also put lead shot and epoxy in a zip-lock bag, mix well, and stuff in there.

since its only a target rifle you have two choices here, make the gun heavier, ie bigger barrel, wooden stock, then fill the butt with lead, and get a nice recoil pad. OR get a lead sled to soak up the recoil.
i personally would go with the lead sled
