Shot a LAR Grizzly Win Mag today
At the range a guy in the next stall was shooting one and I could feel the concussion from every shot, it sounded like a cannon. I went over to ask what he was shooting and he asked me if I wanted to shoot it, of course I did.
I haven't shot many high powered handguns and this one was the most powerful to date, the recoil was crazy, the report was head turning to say the least. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ortrait001.jpg

I owned a Grizzly up until recently. I sold it to pay, in part, for my XD. It's basically a 1911 on steroids. That one looks to be a 50AE caliber. Mine was a 44magnum. I put some hellfire thru that pistol. The only problem, aside from the wicked recoil, was that the ejected shell tended to hit me dead center of my forehead, which on more than one occasion, drew blood. Eye protection was absolutely mandatory as well as a ball cap to protect my head... LAR is not in business anymore last I heard.

i have never shot or seen one in person but that one seems to be chambered in 45 winchester mag which shoots a 230 grain 45 caliber bullet at 1400fps (factory load) to a max of 1700fps (with max power reloads) with an energy from about 1000ft-lbs to about 1500ft-lbs which is a little more then three times what the 45 acp will do.
here is a quote about it: " The .45 Winchester Magnum was introduced in 1979, one of a growing line of large-bore, high-energy rounds that meet or exceed the legendary .44 Remington Magnum revolver cartridge, but available in semi-automatic pistols. The .45 Winchester Magnum is based on a legendary round of historical note - it is formed by lengthening the case of the well-known .45 ACP, the heart of the popular 1911-series pistols. But the .45 Winchester Magnum is not suitable for semi-automatic pistols of conventional design. It was originally slated for use the large Wildey gas-operated pistol, but the handgun experienced great technical problems during development. Eventually, the .45 Winchester Magnum would be chambered in the Wildey as well as the Desert Eagle, AMT AutoMag, the LAR Grizzly, even the single-shot Thompson Contender series, but the cartridge's general lack of popularity is attributed by many to the Wildey's problematic beginnings. A .45 Winchestar Magnum factory load propels a 230 grain bullet at 1400 fps with 1001 ft-lbs of energy. |

I've never done it or seen it done, but pretty sure the 45 winmag case can be made from a cut down 308 rifle cartridge. Those ballistics are in line with the 44 loads I shot out of my Griz.
