It's not funny. It's embarrassing and foolish to think that thugs & gangstas are someone to look up to as role models.

I'm pretty much a young buck but IMHO the rap culture along with all the others now a days are pretty much downhill.

It's rare to find a true songwriters and composers anymore. Just turn on the radio and see what I'm talking about. Rap is littered with people with catchy beats and Vocoders. BUT so has rock- Catchy phrases and remakes.

Rap music has been dead and so has rock for quite awhile now. We've lost great composing, good songwriting and originality.

Seems like everywhere you go everything is driven by the all mighty $.

To be honest, the good music and songwriting is not dead, it is in the underground. I listen to a LOT of online radio these days just so I can hear stuff that is put out by independents. granted, a lot of it still sucks because anybody w/ a couple grand can make a CD and get it played on a local access or college station, but there are some real good lyricists and musicians out there still, they just aren't "marketable" for one reason or another so they never get picked up by mainstream. I admit to favoring metal over other genres, but I also love listening to jazz, old motown, occasional hip hop, true R&B singers/musicians not this thinly disguised rap crap, and even, yes I'll admit it in public.... country. Very few genres can really let the lyrics communicate to the listener the artists feeling/state of mind better than country, especially if it a slow sad song about your dog getting run over by your ex as she speeds away in your old pickup truck.

Oh how I yearn for the Tribe Called Quest days.

Very true. You do have to dig around for the good stuff. Unlike the 70s and 80s, most of the good stuff get no airplay at all. Its the same stuff over and over again and sometimes, if it weren't for the gaps or DJs, I'd swear he same song went on forever!

Radio in most big cities has become like Wal Mart - very bland and the same in whatever city you're in. Part of that can be blamed on companies like Clearchannel and Cumulus buying up stations and making them sound the same, but the market itself is stagnating. Everything sounds the same in every genre....everyone is afraid to try something different. You also have to take into consideration that 90% of the public does NOT have that sophisticated or varied of musical tastes. They gobble up whatever is on the "mix" or "smooth jazz" stations and never want anything else. (not me)

Satellite and internet radio is keeping the few musicians left alive. The guys that actually have talent and musicianship. So are several Pacifica public stations in certain markets.

My musican tastes are all over the place. From the Chili Peppers to Miles Davis to Cuban Jazz, Flamenco guitar and Blues...man...I am all over the place! Yeah, I like metal too but not everyone can be Dream Theater or Queensryche..can they? If somebody plays or sings and does it well...I'll give it a try.

How we got here from talking about rap is beyond me!

LOL

Yeah Like I said, you'd be horrified at the number of young people who come to interviews looking like they're fresh out of a rap video. Or girls who come to work at my current job looking like the women dancers in said video.

Its funny though, they actually hire them. Not for high end positions of course. However I can go to the grocery store, and the guy ringing me up has earrings in both ears, and a big fake platinum chain with medallion on.

Come on guys, you all are missing the fact that their lifestyle drives their music not the other way around. I'm sure we all believe it when they tell us that! Ha!

I'm so sick of rap and the new "rock". Dautry and Hinder make me want to puke because they are every other song on the radio. Just give me someone to listen to that is genuine and I can appreciate it! A friend of mine is in a band called Starboard Journey (he's got a myspace page if you're interested) and they put on a pretty good show. I would rather listen to them than about anyone else because they write what they live, live what they write, and they are genuine. What you see is what you get and Weston will be the same guy at showtime that he will be if you see him on the street. I wish there were more that average folk could identify with.

The clothing, language, "gangsta lean", and overall demeanor is disgusting. It doesn't matter if they're white, black, brown purple or yellow, they're all "N's" and they do a great job of earning that title. Get a job and support your family so I don't have to and then maybe I'll respect you. A little. Living on a welfare check shouldn't be a point of pride.
