7-year-old brings loaded guns to school

  • Story Highlights
  • Police think boy picked up guns at his uncle's home, where he spent the weekend
  • He thought they were toys, forgot he had them, police theorize
  • Child faces no charges, but uncle may be charged for leaving guns available
  • Boy's status at school unclear; school policy calls for automatic expulsion

    From Eric Fiegel
    CNN

(CNN) -- A 7-year-old first-grader showed up at school Monday with two loaded handguns, Baltimore County, Maryland, police told CNN Tuesday.
One of the guns was discovered about 10:15 a.m. when it fell out of the student's pocket at Randallstown Elementary School, just outside of Baltimore, police said. The teacher immediately took the student to the office and police were called.

After police arrived, they searched the child's locker and found another loaded handgun in a book bag, Baltimore Police Cpl. Mike Hill said.
He said police believe the 7-year-old stayed at an uncle's house in Baltimore over the weekend, and found the guns there. Police believe he thought they were toys, he said.

"We don't believe the child had any idea that he still had the guns or do we believe he had any intentions to use the guns in a harmful way," Hill told CNN in a phone interview. Police believe the child got onto the school bus with both guns in his book bag and later discovered the weapons while he was at school.

Police would not comment on what kind of guns they were.

No charges will be filed against the 7-year-old, Hill said, but the uncle could face charges of child endangerment and leaving guns within reach of a child.

School officials called it a very unusual occurrence and would not comment on the status of the first-grader. Bringing a weapon to school carries a mandatory punishment of expulsion, according to Baltimore County Public Schools policy.

The Uncle in this case needs a good slap in the head as well as whatever he's in for legally. This is the kind of stuff that also makes even responsible gun owners look bad and fuels the anti-gun mentality.

    Hmmmm

Wonder what kind of "loaded gun" a 7 yr old could have in his pocket and it not weigh enough for him to "not have any idea he still had the gun".. The report talks about this kid like he is still an infant, a 7 yr old has a lot better idea of what is going on than these guys are painting..

Well the kid should be expelled from school. If he is not, I hope to God some parent of a kid that was expelled for any lesser accident can go back and get their kid put back into school.

This policy and the iron fist that controls it needs to be stopped. Zero tolerance=Lazy administration

When I was 7 I would have KNOWN what I was doing was wrong. I BET the kid knew what he was doing but did it anyway, even if he really thought they were toys he KNEW he was stealing by taking them without permission. I don't believe the kid or the police, everyone thinks a 7 year old is a toddler well they are not and they know right from wrong.
