Technically, open carry is legal in my state.

Technically.

Practically, it's not.

All it takes is one soccer mom to freak out and you can get arrested for disturbance of the peace or inciting mayhem.

There's no law straight-up outlawing open carry. It's just too easy to get arrested for it anyway.

If we lived in a mature, honest, and respectable society, open carry would be a realistic possibility. We do not live in such a world.

its legal in washington bt I wouldn't do it. I believe in the stealth existence. I want to move through the landscape and not be noticed. Having an XD on my belt isn't going ot help that. It also identifies you as the priority target.
We had an active shooter at a mall in Washington so its not that far fetched. Some guy walks into the mall determined to shoot the place up and sees you standing their looking at the latest widget in the window. Who is he going to shoot first? 25 percent or so of cops are killed with their own guns and they carry in retention holsters. If you are in line at the 7 11 with your trusty XD on your hip, you could be a ninja but the guy behind you in line can still hit you over the head with a can of cambells soup and take your XD.

My general approach to conflicts is 1) Don't be there 2) don't get selected 3) disengage 4) Give strong verbal commands 5) Draw 6) Shoot. Open carry has marginal impact on all those issues.

I don't list my guns - I know glocks, FALs, and AKs but I'm not sure my ability to fill a gunsafe with guns make me an expert on anything.

All that you can depend on from a 45 is that it will drill a .45 - .70 inch hole about 14 inches into someone. There will not be "energy dump", people will not fly backwards, and they will not necessarily fall as if they have been struck by lighting.

I carry open in Lancaster, PA and have passed Police with it shown and visable and never had a single problem, I have been to walmart and K-mart and many other stores and everyone sees it and never once been stopped or questioned...

In Idaho it's legal but not too practical. The one time I did it myself and some friends wen into a restaurant in Moscow, ID and on our way out the cops were waiting to have a chat with us about why we had our guns and that we scared the locals. That kind of killed OC for me as I just didn't want to keep getting hassled by the cops. God forbid I OC in Boise, The So Cal transplants would freak. I had an AR on my back-seat driving through town (on my way home from the range) and some soccer mom who rolled up next to me in her SUV freaked and called the cops. I may try to get back into it this summer as that will be much more comfortable than stashing it.

Right now I only OC on my thigh when I am out in the woods.

Legal in Utah, but too much hassle, less tactical advantage. If I didn't live in the city I would probably open carry. I was at a sandwich shop in a rural Utah town, it was busy, and 4 of the 15 customers were OC (I was CC) -- I wonder what the armed robbery stats are in that city...

Or they would turn and walk out looking for a softer target.

There's a reason that malls and such are chosen as "targets" by these idiots and that's because the probability of them meeting any real resistance is slim.

Just watch out for Mr. Bodybuilder in the muscle shirt with the fanny pack!

Before I went through my CCW training I always thought those guys were really odd, after all, only tourists and old ladies wear waist packs, right? Now I know better...
