I just sold my '05 Toyota Tacoma a couple of months ago. I only sold it to get rid of the payment because we are trying to have a baby. It was a perfect truck! I had a 4x4 extended cab with a 4.0L 6-speed manual trans. If I didn't hammer it, I got about 20mpg. It had 36k on it and I sold it for about 20k. I have seen them selling for less here recently.

I have always had excellent luck with GM trucks, specifically the 5.3 Vortec engine. On each one I have owned I install either an open element filter like a Volant or AEM Brute Force, or just a K&N drop in filter, switch to Mobil 1 Synthetic, Deep Creep and SeaFoam them and put on a Cat Back exhaust system and I get regular mileage over 20mpg. I looked at Jap trucks and mid sized and they get worse mileage than the GM lineup. Go big and cozy.

tacoma TRD or dakota witht he 4.7 v-8 if you dont need 1/2 ton.
if you need half ton, ford's are OK. you can pick up dodges cheap as all hell(stay away from the hemi unless you get free gas) i would stay away from chevy IMO. good trucks, but expensive, and not worth te extra cash. the dodge will eb the most comfortable dollar for dollar, and tow just as much, and be just as reliable(so long as you take care of it). i had an 03 hemi 1500. had it set up with a stronger rear axle and bags, bitch towed 12k lbs like nothing. but it was agas guzzler. now the 4.7's make within 25hp(newers ever closer) as the hemi's, and get better mileage

Yeah, I'd say you could not go wrong with a Tundra or Tacoma. I know several people with 2wd Toyota trucks and if you get one with the locking rear end...you'll be amazed at the muck you can get through without 4WD.
The reliability and high resale of Toyota trucks speaks for itself. I am sticking with Toyota from now on. My needs are easily covered by a 1/2 ton and I am more concearned with it being trouble free than anything else. Gas mileage? Forget it...its a pick-up truck. Almost all 1/2 ton pick-ups get within 1-3mpg of each other. Nitpicking one over another because of 1-2mpg better mileage is really silly. Espcially when some of the 1-3 better mpg trucks are less reliable than the Toyota. You'll make up the gas savings in parts and break downs. If gas mileage is a huge concearn...you need to stay away from all pick-ups...sorry. I have owned a few Silverados that were decent trucks. I had one F-150 that was a total POS and will NEVER buy another Ford truck. Dodge? Never owned one but since they're made in Mexico and their resale is pretty low, I can pretty much guarantee I'll never own one. Besides, once you have owned a Toyota truck...you just cannot go with the others. Glock-like reliability! Gotta love that. Sure, there are bigger trucks but if you're into reliability first, go Toyota. My pick-up? 2005 Toyota Tundra Crew Cab Limited 4wd. White with tan leather, 2.5" lift, 285 Toyo Open Country tires, Magnaflow dual exhaust, bedliner, tinted windows, class 3 hitch. Almost 70k miles on the thing and I am still looking for its weak spot. So far, its been a pretty good steed! - Brickboy240

If you want a full size four door go with the GM truck line. They have more room in the back than the Dodge. As long as you are thinking four door, get one that is comfortable for people to ride a long distance in.
My truck is an 07 Silverado 3500 Four door Dually Diesel. Imagine how I feel when for the first time in my life diesel is higher than gasoline. I pull horse trailers so I need the full size one ton truck 4X4. It was barely under 50K but got 5 year no interest out of GMAC. |

I have an '07 tacoma. Here are pix Tacoma Pictures - topdec Gallery.
If you're interested at the Tacoma, browse that site for choosing between 2wd/4wd, deciding between 4dr vs access cab since you're planning on having a baby, about off-road vs sport packages ( locking differential vs limited-slip), and for gas mileage info. Goodluck man. I live in Minnesota where most trucks, until the new Tundra came along, are usually from the big-3. I'm pretty happy with mine. |

the new 08 tundra's are piles of crap. just utter pieces of engineering mishap waiting for its chance to shine. the frame? HA! flex's more than a rubber pencil. so much to the point, the bed scrapes the cab, and rubs the paint off IN NORMAL DRIVING with tow or load. the differentials suck. the inside is cheap, and not well thought out. about the only thing it has goin for it is that monster motor and huge ****in brakes. which would go great in a ford or dodge frame.
i was involved in all these tests and videos. dodge was not included, because ford made the tests, and dodge poses a threat to fords. i also did similar testing between 3 of the 4 big truck companies when i worked for Roush(all but chevy) and the toyota sucked. big trucks-dodge,ford, chevy, yota. in that order. small trucks, toyota, dode, ford and chevy have a tie. in that order. I have a Ford F150 4x4 SuperCrew and love the truck. This is my 4th F150 since 2000 [I drive a lot of miles....] and so far they have been just about bullet proof. With the 4 full size doors, it gives me room to take customers out {or just the family} but I can still deliver to our customers as needed. On this, I am averaging 15.3mpg....not bad for a full sized 4x4.
A buddy has a new Ram1500 quadcab with an 8' bed, but 2wd and he pushes 18-19 mpg on average. I like his truck, but prefer the Ford, esp on the inside. Woof Bowser
