They shoot Horses, Don't they?

I thought I'd start a new thread to continue the Hunting discussion from the "Girls with Guns" Thread.
I don't have a problem with hunting for food or for a purpose (like popping ground squirrels because their holes injure live stock) or even shooting a Bear if it's "Comin' Right for Me!"......But whats the deal with shooting an F-ing Zebra??? Some have said that the money people pay for the hunts help the africans, but is PAYING to shoot a horse REALLY any difference than PAYING to shooting "Feral" pigs in a canned hunt?????

Would anyone here pay to hunt Cows or Mini Horses?

Imagine this lady with a rifle next to her, and this pic would be alot like the picture above!

I think hunting animals you intend to eat or are a nuisance (over population, eating livestock, crops, etc.) is ok. Anything short of that, I'm not a big fan of. Maybe that zebra wouldn't give her some fruit striped gum.

Aren't zebras eaten for food in Africa? Also, doesn't most of Europe indulge in horse meat, and it's primarily the US where people don't eat horses?

Namibia: Trophy Hunting Important for Economy

The Namibian (Windhoek)
4 December 2007
Posted to the web 4 December 2007
Windhoek
TROPHY hunting in Namibia is a significant contributor to the country's economy, with about eight per cent of the annual gross domestic product (GDP), says the president of the Namibia Professional Hunting Association (Napha).
"The hunting of about 25 000 wild animals organised by hunting professionals in 2005 brought a turnover of N$316 million and surpassed income from the entire small livestock sector the same year, which was N$285 million," said Diethelm Metzger, president of Napha at the organisation's annual general meeting last week.

"Trophy hunting is an important section of the tourism industry and grew an average of 12,5 per cent annually since 1996," Metzger added.

This was a remarkable achievement, especially since there was little or no financial support to trophy hunting from Government, he said.
"The National Budget of Government for the defence sector, which is around 10 per cent, is twice as high than for tourism and agriculture together," according to Metzger.
He said for each trophy hunter visiting Namibia, five to six jobs were created since it was a labour-intensive part of the tourism industry, requiring camp attendants, service staff, game trackers, hunting assistants and professional hunters, he told delegates.

Or better yet lets try National Geographic on the issue

Trophy Hunting Can Help African Conservation, Study Says

Trophy hunting can play an essential role in the conservation of African wildlife, according to a growing number of biologists. Now some experts are calling for a program to regulate Africa's sport-hunting industry to ensure its conservation benefits.

According to a recent study, in the 23 African countries that allow sport hunting, 18,500 tourists pay over $200 million (U.S.) a year to hunt lions, leopards, elephants, warthogs, water buffalo, impala, and rhinos.
Private hunting operations in these countries control more than 540,000 square miles (1.4 million square kilometers) of land, the study also found. That's 22 percent more land than is protected by national parks.
As demand for land increases with swelling human populations, some conservationists are arguing that they can garner more effective results by working with hunters and taking a hand in regulating the industry.
Sport hunting can be sustainable if carefully managed, said Peter Lindsey, a conservation biologist with the University of Zimbabwe in Harare, who led the recent study.
"Trophy hunting is of key importance to conservation in Africa by creating [financial] incentives to promote and retain wildlife as a land use over vast areas," he said.
In an upcoming edition of the journal Conservation Biology Lindsey and an international team of colleagues call for a plan to increase the conservation benefits of sport hunting, including a certification program to more tightly regulate the industry.
"To justify the continued existence of [protected] areas in the context of increasing demand for land, wildlife has to pay for itself and contribute to the economy, and hunting provides an important means of achieving this," Lindsey said.
Hunting's Checkered Past
In order to be certified under Lindsey's proposed plan, hunting operations would have to prove their commitment to animal welfare, careful management of hunting quotas, wide-ranging conservation objectives, and the development of local communities.
"The time has come for greater scrutiny from scientists to promote maximum conservation benefits from hunting," Lindsey said. Continued on Next Page

If im not mistaken, Idians relied on horses for transportation AND food. Is a horse anymore unclean than a pig or a cow? If the meat will be eaten by SOMEONE, then why not harvest the animal, I dont even care if its someone other than the hunter eating it.

Hunting has been around since the beginning of time, its only since we can buy food in a grocery and let other people do the killing that we feel the need to criticize others for doing the killing. Im sure if you had to kill something or starve, you would kill.

Most times, killing done by a hunter is much more painless to an animal than being killed by a predator.

EVERY time. Predation is always slower and more painful, natural death is off the scale with regards to pain and suffering.
I would/have killed puppies, no big deal, feral animals have to be dealt with by folks like me cause other folks won't. Would kill a baby horse "if it CAME RIGHT AT ME" lol

P.S. I'm not a hunter, never have been. But things have to be taken care of.
