CCW questions -- Round Chambered?

So my friend, who has been carrying for almost 20 years, doesn't keep a round chambered while he carries. I was surprised to hear this, as I always thought him to be a bit over the top when it comes to defense and stuff like that.

I have been carrying with a round chambered since I got my license last year, thinking that if I ever need my gun, I need it RIGHT NOW! The extra time it takes to chamber a round could turn the tide in favor of the BG.

How do you carry?

Is having a round chambered all day (nothing in the chamber at night -- and magazine lying next to the gun) harmful to the gun?

This is the first time I've heard of someone carrying with a round unchambered. Sounds odd to me, just a few more seconds you need that you might not have.

All firearms fully loaded at all times.

Especially at night!

If you're not going to carry with a round in the chamber, don't carry. If you're not comfortable with your level of safety and gun handling skills to carry with a round in the chamber, don't carry.

That is exactly what I thought! But he is 45 years old and has been firing guns, even handguns, pretty much since he was old enough to walk. He is anally safe about everything, all the time, especially guns (where anally safe is of course recommended). Never made much sense to me...

NOT having a round chambered while carrying may be harmful to YOU! To each his own though. I see no reason to unload the gun at night either. If you are worried about mag spring wear, I wouldn't be. Proof is in the pudding though, I would shoot the loaded SD rounds every few months and cycle in new ones. Some rotate in different mags as well to let the springs "rest". Shouldn't be needed with a quality mag that has a quality spring. Some also carry/store with mags down one round to "relieve" fatigue on the spring. Not me, I load +1 to get every round possible!

a gun without a bullet chambered isn't a gun, its an ammo storage device. Unfortunately, the second it takes him to chamber a round may very well cost him his life one day...hopefully the issue never comes up...
