Why is Carrying a Gun Openly so Taboo in this country?
I for one cannot think of why it is so taboo.......I can think of many reasons.....but none that are rational.
Please share you thoughts!

because america has become unfamiliar with guns as a whole by the mass population of cities. the population shift into a more urban enviroment means less people grow up with guns than before. Also the last time americans had a war on their soil was over 60 years ago. Not to mention the liberal media isnt helping the situation.

Because the Sheeple of the country have been trained by the media and our government that only criminals have guns and if you are carrying one you surely are preparing to go on a robbery/killing spree.

I know it's cliche, but the media has a lot to do with it.
Most of America gets its gun education from violent movies and the media. The media always happens to portray that if you've got a gun and don't have a badge, then you're a criminal. The only thing that is news worthy these days is how criminals, assisted by firearms, terrorise the citizens. Also, Hollywood has shown us that if you've got a gun but don't have a badge, you are bound for violence (just like in the movies).

It has to do with the misinformed general public seeing firearms as weapons for offense, not tools for defense. To echo what has already been said, the media has played a large part in this. It's frustrating that news channels filter out the reports of a person avoiding a mugging or a rape due to their use of a firearm while those same news channels cream their journalistic jeans when some whackjob shoots up a school/bank/workplace/etc.

I must agree, the media has put a real bad image in the view of the public, that guns are bad, why do you think the NRA is always brought up when some stupid ass decides to go nuts and shoot people, or that fat bastard(not austin powers) michael moore posting his opinions. or am i just off my rocker?
Either way it's too bad, i mean we have to sneek around when we carry, and if some one sees what we have they freak out, true story about six years ago a buddy and i went out to the local range, went out to burger king for lunch afterwards, he being a cop was a little more free with if people saw what he had, but we were at the register and the gal behind it looked and turned pale, my buddy just plain as day said "We are undercover cops, it's ok" damn that sucked because ten minutes later a stater came in and we were immedaitely pointed out, he came over, my buddy flashed his badge, and Then everyone in the BK was ok. What's the deal? but my girlfreind does have a point, she in not as free with guns as i nor the rest of my family, but she just does not want to see it, in her opinion it's kinda like the bible pushers who wake you up at 7 am on a weekend (no offense to anyone who chooses to do that kind of stuff, everyone has opinions on importances) forcing opinions on others or once again have i fallen off the rocker? |

This is why people are for the most part scared of them, because they don't understand them. The media pushes this thinking and people like to live in denial that there isn’t any reason to carry. We are a civilized society not the wild west. Socialist Brain Washing if you ask me. I have opened carried and I always get strange looks form people, so I start twitching my neck and start acting erratic and they scatter like roaches. Joking about this but get looks.

Part of irrational mentality by a large portion of the population may stem from what the media and law enforcement has been drilling into everyone's heads for years. For many years, they have told everyone that the smartest thing they could do is not resist criminals or fight back in any way...cause you might get hurt. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB idea. Baa go the Sheeple. As was said earlier in this thread, if you have a gun you must be up to no good. Why would you want to defend yourself when the "correct" thing to do is give up and not resist. It's no wonder criminals love states without CCW laws...easy pickings. Ok, now I'll step off my soapbox...
