Ohio Goofy Vehicle Open Site Law
One of the threads earlier had a LEO say something to the effect that they can't wait until we can cover those things up, but in the mean time...
Does anybody have tips or trix as to how you should carry in a vehicle on your person and in plain sight??? I know the laws haven't been tested and I know there are web pages to read, but what I am looking for is what a LEO would look for to see that a firearm is in plain sight?? T |

insightful....
however with it having to be in a holster, aside from the obvious answer of a shoulder holster, in a owb holster on the left side??? right side???
How about iwb, but shirt tucked in so the firearm is exposed... I am really hoping to avoid more "Uhm.... The firearm?" kind of responses, I am not debating the law and we have had threads like this, but since time has passed and CHL has become more predominant here, I was hoping to get some experience postings (A year and three months have passed since Ohio got CHL)... Anybody else..? |

Well, when you ask a question like, "What is a cop going to look for to see if he can see the gun?" you're going to get answers like, "The gun."

Cheap uncle mikes holster + velcro strip, strap it around your theigh.
They can't say anything about it then. On the otherhand, I carry my pistol in the glovebox, the lock is engaged but the key is still in the lock.

I have asked several LEO's this same question and the responces I have gotten are:
1. I want to be able to see the gun if I walk a 360 degree circle around your vehicle. 2. I want to be able to see the gun when I walk up to your drivers window. 3. Plain site is Plain site. 4. As long as its not being covered by your clothing. What I do is slide it around to at least my 2:30 and place my seatbelt BEHIND the grip. That way they cant say you were trying to cover it up because I even took the time to make sure it was in front of my seat belt strap. In the winter, I keep a thigh holster in my car and strap it to my thigh and put the gun in there so my jacket doesnt cover the gun. Makes truck drivers take a second look though.

Thanks Itch... That is what I am talking about... I have a shoulder holster that I will use for long trips, but to run some errands, I dont want to have to go through that...
360 degrees is quite a requirement... T |

I am a retired LEO and can honestly say this is one of the worst laws I have ever seen. It is so vague that an individual can't clearly understand it. I think the thigh holster is probably the best idea, although I don't like any of the "makeshift" responses to this law. If you carry a Seacamp like I do a lot, you are precluded from keeping it in your pocket. It forces you to be handling your gun constantly when entering or leaving your vehicle, and the worst part is it is totally open for individual officer interpertation of what is not concealed. What is not concealed for one may be concealed for another. Not a good situation for people trying to obey their law, but can't figure out what the heck it means.
I bet if you ask 10 LEO's in Ohio you will get a variety of answers. Not a good situation. Gary |
