The recommendations on SIDS seems to change every few years, thus contradicting previous recommendations. The fact is that SIDS is just that, sudden. The baby forgets to breath. It's really got nothing to do with stuffed animals or pillows, although those can be hazardous in a crib. But if a baby suffocates on something like that it can't really be classified as SIDS because the cause will be known. Our twin boys are five months old now and they are rolling all around. They sleep best when on their stomachs, and although it freaked us out for the first week or so to put them to bed like that, we realized that they rolled onto their tummies anyway. Our daughter was the same way. Keep a close watch on your little one until you are reassured enough to sleep at night, but they do pretty well on their own. The thing that really freaks you out is the first time they sleep all night, because you wake up in the morning and your heart almost stops until you check on them and see that they are fine.

Over the years, drs. have changed their minds from babies sleeping on their back to sleeping on their stomach to back again.

When our son was born (25yrs. ago) the rule was place them on their stomach. When our youngest daughter was born 6yrs. later, it was on their back. I would worry so much about the position as I would about what is in the bed with them as has been said. We never bought any of the aids mentioned and we covered them with a blanket. Things and ideas do change tho, so you do what you believe is right.

After going on numerous calls where babies had died of SIDS, to even doing cpr on one, I was very concerned when we had babies of our own. I don't think they got much sleep their first year because if I couldn't see the rise and fall of their chest thru their blanket, I would shake them until they awakened.

I've survived three kids, all flipping from their backs to their tummies and back again....

The ability to flip themselves over is a good (and preferred) thing. It means they're THAT much closer to doing a half-pushup, THEN starting to crawl around.

IIRC (youngest is 5 now), we didn't have anything in the crib except for a loose-knit baby blanket (afghan). No pillow. No toys. If there is a toy, make it a SMALL stuffed animal. Just so they have something to hold or see to help them sleep. Definitely no pillows! No crib bumpers! Nothing that could smother the child is he/she rolled and ended up against it....

Babies will flip over a few times during the night most likely. When they end up on their tummies, they'll just turn their heads so they can breathe.

Get a baby monitor so you can hear struggling. We used one of these for all three kids, and it helps you hear when they stir or cough or whatever.

You're doing great: you're worried about your baby. If you didn't worry, I'd worry about YOU.
