I don't know exact specifics, but if you bought a Yugo 59/66 you can't really modify much. If you remove anything, Grenade Launcher, Muzzle Break, Night Sights, Bayonet, you have to remove ALL of the other features and then you're playing the 10 or less imported parts game.

Legally this is the most important line:
Title 18 USC § 925(e): A law that allows Curio &Relic firearms to be imported—even those like Yugoslavian Type 59/66 Rifles that might otherwise be in violation of Title 18 USC § 925(d)(3). Despite the fact that the rifle is already here, almost anytime you modify your C&R rifle it loses C&R status and you'll need to comply with 922(r) and the 1994 AWB.

From what I've read the 59/66s are probably the worst SKS to pick for modification from a legal standpoint. You're best off leaving it stock.

Thanks for the great post. I love the info this guy has there. I might have to get another SKS one of these days.

http://www.victorinc.com/SKS-FAQ.html

This should answer all legality questions! The 59/66A1 is the worst of the Yugo's. If you play the legality game the Bayo, GL, and Night Sights gotta go. Read the FAQ to make sure!

As far as stock refinishing goes, I hear that Tung oil is the way to go!

Here are the SKS boards. If we can't answer any questions here, this would be the place too go!

Unless you permenantly modify the reciever where it cannot be returned to standard specs it will not "lose it's C&R status", pistol grips and hi-cap mags must have all the complience parts with it, the mag and pistol grip (if US made) count as complience parts.

The only draw back to this rifle is the lack of a chrome bore (treat all milsurp ammo as corrosive) and the 59/66 only gas tube. Make sure the gas switch works like it should or you will get feed problems. I have one with all the grenade stuff taken off, Albanian bolt carrier, 20rd Chinese fixed mag and a screw on muzzle brake from http://www.rifletech.com/yugobrake39-a.htm.

ATF has seen this rifle and it's ok since it has military spec hardware designed for this rifle and a signed copy of it's complience from the agent. If any of you have the C&R hand book, look it up, the in the FAQ section.

Just put American parts on it and remove what you don't want on it. Stock, hand guard, gas tube/op rod, trigger group, muzzle device (Yugos only since they are threaded and can be re pinned so as to make perminant) puts you in full compliance with section 922(r). You can take off anything you want off that rifle as long as you keep the FIXED mag- (no folding stock without ALL the above parts).......................as long as it has a FIXED stock and FIXED mag, the SKS is not considered a Semi-auto Assault weapon. ATF Book #ATF P 5300.4 (01-00) Page 125- Section 19- General Information.
