Ankle protection is nice! But to be honest I only wear them when I ride on "rides" I usually wear my normal timberland hiking boots to and from w@#k and to the store and what not.

That's what I was thinking. Right now, I won't be doing any long rides to go anywhere. Maybe a day of just buzzing around on it, but I have a similar boot, not Tims, but similar that I'd wear.

Anything else that's comparable to the DR650 by the other makers that I should look for?

Honda XR650 is very similar, with the only real difference being it has more of a motocross type suspension. It is worse on the road, but better on trails, sits about 1.5 inches taller as well. And the Yamaha like you showed earlier.

I assume I'll be doing more road riding than trails, but who knows once I'm more comfortable on the bike and find out where the places to ride are around here. There are a lot of rails to trails places in the area that are old railroad lines.
