Heres the funny part, Me and D are in the tent and its freezing cold so we are all snuggled up in our big ole sleeping bag thing, and we hear something, so I ask him.."Whats that?" He tells me, "DONT MOVE, its probably a bear" So I am just freaked to no end!!!!! Well his butt fell asleep, and I had to pee so bad, I held it all night cuz I was so scared, I kept hearing the noise. In the morning, I finally told him I had to go so bad all night and told him I was scared to because of the bear, and he said, "Didnt I tell you I was just kidding?" BRAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First time I took my wife camping in a tent she was (and still is) scared. We were in a state park in Indiana towards the end of the warm weather, so not that many campers were in the park, and you could pick your own site. SO I picked one that was way away from everybody else. It was nice, but dark, very dark. Did I mention dark. The site backed up to a small wet lands area. We had our first dog with us. He was a poster child for encouraging the use of doggy downers, this dog was always wired like he just drank 16 cans of leaded coke.
Well it's dark, I have a nice fire going and the wife wants to read her book, fine by me. So i try to get the gas lantern lit, but the mantle was damaged and I didn't have a spare. So I had brought along my "portable sun" in case we had to set up camp in the dark. It's a 500 watt halogen flood lamp. So this is all I had to "illuminate" her book for her. It was so bright I couldn't see if the fire was still going. But anywho, we finally went to bed, and she kept hearing noises coming from the wet land area 15 foot behind our tent, so she was all tense, this makes the dog even more tense, so he's constantly growling. They are feeding off of each other. I keep going out to see what is making the noise, couldn't see anything or anybody. I figure, what the heck. lets goto sleep, it's just a critter doing what a critter does. But, she and the dog weren't happy with my notion. SO to shut em both up, I set up the 500 watt halogen shinning towards the wet lands area. The light was outside the tent. You could read a book in the tent. She was happy now, as was the dog.

Ever since then, when we go camping, I now take along at least 1000 watts of portable lighting. You could land a frickin 747 at our camp site it's so well lit. It's like frickin daylight. I swear, last time I had to wear sunglasses at 11pm. NO need for a campfire, heck, hold the marshmallows over a portable lite hun, it works just as well. Works great as a axx warmer too if it's chilly out, just wear dark close so nobody sees your business.

Another time we went camping with a group of about 10 people we talked into going, none of whom were camping type people except one guy. We started out doing a 17 mile canoe trip, then camping overnight, then going to Amish country to buy some cheese.

The canoing was terrible, I had to tow my sister inlaw and her daughter in their canoe for 16.8 miles because they could not figure out how to go down the river without playing bumper shore with the canoe every 20 foot. I swear , it took the two of them an hour and a half to go maybe 200 foot downriver from the drop -IN point. So i used a dog leash to tie our boats together. Needless to say, the sis in law was not in a good mood.

So that night, in July, 11 of us are all sleeping in a 12 person tent, it's tight in there, with our one outdoor guy sleeping on the picnic table without a blanket. It got cold, damn cold. My thermometer on my car said it was 40 degrees. So, me , being the gentle men that I am, gave my blanket to my wife and went to sleep in my car, with the motor on and the heater blowing. Boy was the wife pissed I didn't wake her, sooner then she heard me in the car. Boy was everybody else upset I hadn't packed more blankets or a heater.

I now always pack a small heater, always.
