Schooling is an individual choice that parents make for their children, and I would be a hypocrite to tell anyone who sends a child to public school that he or she is wrong to do it. I will explain my views on the subject, however. Whose standards do I have to live up to to make sure that I am doing it right and living up to the task? Should I make sure that my daughter is schooled only up to the level of the local school districts . . . perhaps the ones that are in academic emergency, as is the case in some of our local school districts? Homeschooling associations do not monitor the children's academic progress and make sure they are keeping up to State standards. One of the biggest benefits to homeschooling is the ability to make individual choices and school your child in the most beneficial, personal way possible . . . at a faster pace for some subjects, at a slower pace when they need more work, follow the child's interest and really get to delve into a subject that matters to the child. I take issue with the fact that only people who have an official teaching certificate are qualified to teach children. I grant that there are teachers who are more knowledgeable than I am in certain subjects at the upper high school levels. When our daughter gets there, we can adjust accordingly and make sure that her needs are being met. How is it possible that we can help our children learn to eat, crawl, walk, run, count, say the alphabet, etc., but when they hit 5, we're no longer qualified and have to turn them over to the State for the "proper" education and have them tell us how to "do it right"? You are absolutely right that it is tough work. Some days I would love to ship her off on the next bus that passes our house, LOL. But there are also times of great joy and I take great pride in being able to see, every single day, my daughter learn and progress and grow and know that I'm having a direct impact on her every single day. She took an assessment test at the end of the year and scored in the 99th percentile, and on one portion of her test, she scored as well as a 9th grader would score on the same test . . . and she just finished 1st grade. Talk about a feeling of accomplishment! Socialization - the ever popular belief by the non homeschooling community that your child is locked up and away from other children. {sigh} Let me give you a first-hand perspective of what homeschooling is really like. My daughter is in dance class and will be starting soccer at the end of October. She takes weekly French lessons with other children. We have park programs, library programs, Museum programs, weekly homeschool gym class, music co-op, planned field trips, zoo homeschooling classes, etc. etc. etc. In addition, she plays outside with the other neighborhood kids and doesn't stand off in a corner crying, afraid, because she didn't see other kids her same age in a classroom for 8 hours. Her best friend lives on the other side of town and they see each other every weekend. And the thing is - we're not outside the norm with our activities. Most of the homeschoolers I know have schedules just like this - and some even more. Socialization means different things to different people and here's how my view is different. To me, socialization does not mean 30 kids, born in the same year, sitting in a classroom, eating lunch and playing at recess for 8 hours a day 180 days a year. My daughter socializes with a wide variety of ages and can talk with an adult as easily as she can talk with a child her age. If she goes off into a career one day, the chances are very good that her coworkers are not going to all be the same age as her. She will work with people younger than her, she will work with people older than her. I like to think that we're preparing her socially for that as well. Socialization to me does not mean that we have to voluntarily subject our child to bullying, taunting, hitting, punching, bad language and all of that other stuff that can and does go on in school just because she has to be "socialized" and will have to deal with it when she gets older. I'm also not going to break her arm because one day she might have to deal with a broken arm when she gets older. You teach coping skills, you talk about situations, and you prepare them for IF something comes up, but it doesn't mean that the only way they can be prepared is if they actually experienced it. We homeschool for this reason - we believe that we can provide her with a better education, in a better environment, than our local public school. Homeschooling was the best option for US, but that's not to say it's for everyone. It isn't. My mom tries to pressure my sister into homeschooling her boys and I always defend my sister because in her case, school outside of the home is the best for her child. Whatever decision is made, it should always be in the best interest of the child, whether it's public school, parochial school, charter school, online charter school, etc. I just really take exception with people painting homeschooling with a broad brush Just out of curiosity . . . the parents that you know that weren't doing it right - what does that mean? Sorry for the length of this post - I got on a roll. |
