Grip I built a 91 gti a few years ago because my old man was tired of watching german imports run at the drag strip. We gave ourselves a 7k budget and I vouched to build a german import to beat his 67 vette. He paid a friend to throw on some things and I bought a 91 gti shell i got for $500 and through a vr6 in there and a limited slip a clutch good to 400whp and did all the work myself replacing every nut and bolt and wire. Painted it flat black and ran a mid 13 beating a 327 vette. Needless to say my dad was pissed. I tapped my budget and he only through a few thousand out since he had it since 71 and it only has around 40k on it.

I built a handful of cars and think the miata is ubber gay, but that monster miata conversion does not seem so bad. I am all about sleeper status. 280whp in a flat black pos looking gti is not bad.

yeah a miata is uber gay....but how would you feel getting beat up on by a 200whp NA miata, weighing 1500lbs that is uber gay?

i think corvette's are pretty lame, as well as camaro's, and mustangs...but i work on them everyday and have respect for all cars that are purpose built...miata, or porsche...a nice race car, is a nice race car to me.

btw..miata's dominate most larger cars with twice as much power on the auto-x track's.

power doesnt mean anything if the car cant get it to the ground...most people looking for large amounts of power often overlook things like tires, suspension and brakes.

I like my dads vette which is now mine since he can no longer take care of it. he bought it back in 71 when it was only 4 years old. Someone t-boned his 68 chevelle so he bought the vette, which has history to me and my family, since he took my mom out on their first date in it. 40k on a 67 last year of the stingray, pretty rare car and one of my favorites. How many people do you know that have had the same car for over 40 years? Probably not many. Unfortunately he finds no joy in wrenching on them anymore. All his friends who had street rod shops sold out and moved south. It is pretty sad. As for a 200whp nat. miata, it takes money and big valves.

true..but still not as much $ as most cars.

id rather build another honda anyday though...im not a huge fan of mazda.

my brothers girlfriend just purchased an 03 golf 2 door GTi 1.8T...very nice and comfortable car, but VW's are very expensive to modify for minimal gains.

we will probably talk her into some turbo breathing mods like intake, exhaust etc etc..and hopefully suspension and wheels.

thats because it was the last serial # to roll off the assembly line, and the entire restoration was a points car restoration.

my boss has been working on a teal 57 vett, points car restoration for the last 3 years...what a pain in ther ass that is....every week or so someone needs to come and look at the car to make sure everything is being done the way the factory would have done it back in the day.

a points car means thet every single inch of the car has the same exact imperfections and whatnot that they had rolling off the assembly line brand new....we had to maintain the factory weld imperfections and weld spatter on the frame, the fiberglass body has to have the same exact over spray pattern on the inside of the shell (even though nobody will ever see it)...hoses have to have the same markings facing the same directions as the factory new cars in 57...its really a crazy kind of restoration.

i stopped working on that project after i finished the frame restoration.
