Beardman-
A note to you and perhaps more importantly your wife-
While never discussed, everyone I now with kids has been through exactly this. Everyone, many more than once. Doctors tell you a totally different figure (40%?) but that's just crazy, and everyone with more than 1 kid, and I mean 99% of the 40+ couples I know well that have kids have been through this.
It sucks, but the human body is very challenging to duplicate, and has extremely high standards for itself. There are amazing detectors that say, "hm... not right this time, try again." From the lens you are in, it's perhaps impossible to understand this, but once you've got 2+ kids, you'll get this... it's a blessing, something wasn't right, and her body took necessary action.
You'll be back up, pregnant and onto prepping plans but the fall.
Practice makes perfect!
Again, deepest condolences to you and yours, and know you are so not alone, we all go through it and we get through it.
