I'd recomend avoiding wd-40. It does displace water, and acts as a lubricant, but when it wears out it will keep other better oils and grease from sticking to those parts.

I wash all my guns in the dishwasher. It leaves them with a lemony scent...and we all love the smell of lemons at the range.

I use the gun parts cleaner in an aerosol can to flush the gunk out after scrubbing it with Hoppes. Then I use compressed air to blow it out.

I usually use solvents because they are fast and easy. But if the gun is really dirty I have used a steam cleaner which cuts through the dirt like a hot knife through butter. The steam cleaner leaves very little moisture and you can take a can of air and blow dry it easily. Then oil her up and you are good to go. Steam cleaning is messier so maybe do it in a shower or the bathtub.

Rubbing alcohol should dry out any water traces and evaporate residue free.

I toss my guns in the washing machine, then stick them in the dryer with a sheet of Bounce. Careful though, they make an awful noise in the dryer.
