Question about CCL
Arkansas passed a new law last year that if you are pulled over in your car that you have to present your CCL licence with your drivers lisence wether you are carrying or not. My question is if you are a passenger and are pulled over do you show the officer and let them know that you are carrying or just leave it alone.

I've never been pulled over but I'm confident I'd say, "I have a weapon in the vehicle" as I handed him my drivers license and carry permit. Only seems logical...especially if that is the law like in Arkansas...I'll have to check Georgia. |

I dont know the law....although I'd guess you don't have to tell him, but I'm going to just in case the situation becomes escalated.

Hmmmm. I never thought of that before. I have been pulled over while I was driving, but never as a passenger. I would probably, very politely, inform him that I am a CCL owner and am carrying my WEAPON. I totally refrain from using the word GUN. Especially if there is more than one officer present. I don't want one of them to just hear the word GUN! and come unglued!! Better to be safe than sorry!

In Texas, if you are a passenger, and NOT asked for ID from the LEO, you aren't required to disclose. I think it's probably a better idea to just stay out of it unless you are asked to exit the vehicle. Then perhaps you should disclose that you have license and are carrying. I don't think you should use the word GUN!, unless you really need some excitement in your life.

I good thing to think out.
I would deal with it on a case-by-case basis. If the person driving is getting stopped for a broken tail light or such, there should be no escalation occuring. So I might just keep my mouth shut unless addressed by the officer. If asked to respond, I would do so, state that I am holding and ask the officer how he/she wishes to handle the situation as I hand over identification. Bottom line for me is give them control. It's not worth getting shot over something stupid. It's also not worth escalating something that does not need to escalate. With all that said, every state has differing laws. Make a few phone calls and ask your local LE for advise in dealing with such a situation. |

I asked this question in my CCL. The instructor went and asked a officer working the store and the reply was yes, when riding in a vehicle you should inform the officer or have the driver do so.

In Oklahoma the law requires us to tell a LEO on "first contact" that we are carrying a concealed weapon, whether we are driver or a passenger. Just makes sense as you do not want to surprise a LEO if for some reason he asks everyone to step out of the car.

As a practical matter if I were a passenger I would evaluate the situation before deciding to volunteer this info. As posted previously, simple speeding ticket or burned out light, no. Any situation in which the LEO might have to have contact with me, absolutely I would tell them. An even voice and the word "Weapon" as opposed to "Gun" are also key. Let them know you are a GFL holder first and then mention the weapon. Take their cues as to what to do from there.
