I just wanted to share.
Hi folks.
I just wanted to share with you, that my grandmother Hilda West passed away this morning at about 5:00 a.m at the age of 88. She was a wonderful woman and one of my heroes. She came to Las Vegas in 1949 after leaving a bad relationship in Nebraska. She had three children, an old car, an eighth grade education, and $150 in her pocket, and she managed to make a living and raise her three, plus two more without ever taking a dime from the government (an achievement she was quite proud of). She worked in, and operated a series of restaurants in Las Vegas. Her first managerial position was running the NCO club at Nellis Air Force base where she met my grandfather. Later she opened her own restaurant, Hilda's. Her world class cooking, fiery demeanor, and exemplary service made her a legend in old Las Vegas, any of you who have been in Las Vegas for more than two decades will likely remember her restaurant. She interacted with a number of "Las Vegas Legends" and once slapped Muhammad Ali in his own home (a story for another occasion). Through her life she never lost her sense of class, her simple "farm-girl" demeanor, her sense of charity, or her love for others. She taught me a variety of important lessons that I have tried my best to exemplify : Amongst them are the simple principles that the greatest gift you can ever give to a man or woman is an opportunity, and that if you treat everyone like they're part of your family a majority of people will respond in kind. She lived a full and incredible life, and she will be sorely missed. Thanks for listening, Ryan
