And Linux has the most flavour... Command Line(CLI)/Xwindow(X) vi/emacs rpm/deb/ports/tar.gz u2date/yum/apt-get/emerge Red Hat/SUSE/Debian/Ubuntu/Gentu/Slackware/(Add the other 50 distros here.) So if you don't like one distro try another. There is something there for everyone. Also just to make Stalman happy, it's GNU/Linux that is the kernel and Ubuntu is the distribution (distro).

Hello all;
Before diving into Ubuntu, please make sure you understand the limitations. There are many software packages that will not work under Ubuntu or any Unix based system. However, if you're not tied down to MS due to work or school (like I am) then you will not need to worry as the alternatives that are provided by the Linux/Ubuntu world are, many times, better. At home, I have to run Vista for DX10 (because there are about 2 games that support it... j/k). Then, I have XP for all of the non-Vista compatible games (quite a few of these). Lastly, when I can finally get down to serious computing, I go to Ubuntu (let the MS fans flame away). I prefer Ubuntu simply because of it's highly customizable environment. There is almost no aspect of this OS that cannot be tweaked somehow. However, be forewarned that this comes at the cost of a lot of reading. Make sure you inform yourself before taking the plunge. If you take your time, do some reading, and visit the Ubuntu forums, you will find out all that you need to know in order to make your Ubuntu installation work. Compiz Fusion anyone? You can use WINE to run MS programs on Ubuntu or you can use VMware to run a virtual machine. Merry Christmas everyone! Almost forgot, you can check the Ubuntu Wiki for answers about specific hardware and software issues. Good luck. Last edited by fortinbras; 12-25-2008 at 03:46 PM. |

The difference is that the open source software people go by international standards for file types. How many times have you had to upgrade Microsoft Office because someone sent you an Office document written on Office 2008 and you only have Office 2005? Microsoft changes the design of their filetypes to force people to upgrade. Open source software standardizes a filetype, and the supporting programs evolve to offer more innovation, with no change to the filetype standard. This means that old Granny with linux from 10 years ago can write a document on her linux office software that you will be able to read. Conversely, you can write an office document on your 2008 vintage linux, and she'll be able to read, and write to it w/o any difficulties due to changes in the filetype (ala Microsoft). .rtf - Rich Text Format -is an open standard. .pdf - Portable Document Format - (yes, believe it or not) is an open standard. .html - hypertext transfer markup language - is an open standard There are many more filetypes that are held to international standards (meaning Microsoft can't change them to their benefit [they can't change them to make you upgrade, just to be able to keep up]). |

No need to pick one or the other.
No need to be scared of incompatibility. No need to format your HD. Choose both. Use both. Dual boot, people. Dual boot.
