Suse 10.2 is old and way out of date..

Ubuntu is what I have been running for the past 2 years or so, and I really like it. The kernel and innards are based on Debian.

The only thing I know of for Ubuntu is ndiswrapper for your oddball wifi drivers. Usually on 8.10 its been good for me on recognizing everything I have right out of the box.

Live support (probably not so much on Christmas day) on the freenode IRC network.

I believe Pidgin is set up to join there, support is in the #ubuntu channel.

Pardon my ignorance on Ubuntu, but I have questions. Is Ubuntu an OS that would take place of Windows? Would/should I have to remove Windows to run Ubuntu?

I am sure I will have more questions...

Nope! The laptop I'm using right now has both Vista and Ubuntu on it, I just select which one I want to use at boot up.

The Ubuntu installation CD will walk you through it. . . pretty straight forward.

For specific advice, check out the Ubuntu Forums Ubuntu Forums

I am having issues with windows on my wifes desktop, so if I download Ubuntu to a file on my laptop, burn it to a disk, format the hard drive on her desktop, install ubuntu and say good bye windows?

Yep, you can do that too.

Or do the dual boot thing and then look for fixes to the windows issues (registry tweaks etc) in your own sweet time.

Either way you can't lose.

The Ubuntu CD will let you re-format or re-partition, whatever you like.
